The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), in collaboration with Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is excited to announce the launch of the 'VC Unlocked: Tokyo 2025' program, starting September 29, 2025. This initiative seeks to leverage the expertise and networks of the renowned venture capital firm 500 Global from Silicon Valley, offering Japanese venture capitalists an unparalleled opportunity to enhance their global investment knowledge and capabilities.

Bridging Japan's VC Landscape with Global Expertise



The 'VC Unlocked: Tokyo 2025' program is designed to provide Japanese startup investors with a structured learning environment. Participants will learn about international investment theories and practices, gaining invaluable skills and knowledge that meet global standards. This intensive program is facilitated by experienced U.S. VCs, providing lectures and hands-on workshops.

Program Highlights



The course consists of four days of in-person sessions, alongside a day of online activities. The curriculum will cover critical topics, including:

  • - Understanding and Designing Investment Frameworks: Participants will delve into fundamental investment methodologies, focusing on structuring effective frameworks.

  • - Fund Modeling and Portfolio Development: Attendees will engage in exercises involving fund modeling techniques essential for building and managing robust portfolios.

  • - Startup Evaluation and Deal Flow Management: The program addresses best practices for assessing startups, managing deal flows, and conducting cap table analysis.

  • - Term Sheet Negotiation and Follow-On Investment: Participants will practice real-world scenarios involving negotiating term sheets and executing follow-on investments.

  • - Networking with Overseas VCs and LPs: A crucial aspect of the program is connecting participants with international venture capitalists and limited partners, emphasizing the importance of building a global network.

Additionally, selected participants will have the chance to partake in a local program in the Bay Area, enabling them to interact directly with leading investors within that vibrant ecosystem. Note: Travel costs will be the responsibility of the participants.

  • - In-Person Dates: September 29 (Monday) - October 2 (Thursday), 2025, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • - Online Date: October 3 (Friday), 2025.
  • - Venue: Tokyo Innovation Base, Marunouchi 3-8-3, 2F, Chiyoda City, Tokyo.
  • - Language: English (lectures and materials).
  • - Capacity: Approximately 30-35 participants (selection through an application process).
  • - Cost: Free of charge (participants are responsible for domestic travel and accommodation costs).
  • - Application Deadline: August 25 (Monday), 2025, at 11:59 PM (JST).

Who Should Apply?



The program is suitable for individuals with the following qualifications:
  • - A minimum of three years of investment experience in venture capital, government funds, or family offices.
  • - A proactive approach to investing in Japanese startups.
  • - Experience in executing at least three to five deals.
  • - Commitment to attending both in-person and online sessions comprehensively.
  • - Proficiency in English communication (required).
