Shanghai Electric Unveils Innovative Robotics and Smart Factory Solutions at WAIC 2026
In a groundbreaking presentation at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026, Shanghai Electric showcased its extensive range of embodied intelligence robotics and native AI smart factory solutions. The focus of the event was on transforming high-end equipment manufacturing, a sector that often demands operations within confined spaces and complex tasks requiring consistent precision.
The theme of the exhibition, AI for All Smart Squad, Shining Without Limits, highlighted Shanghai Electric's advancements in AI robotics, foundational robot components, and comprehensive smart factory solutions that span robotic systems, critical parts, industrial software, and the smart factory architecture.
Wang Chunlei, Deputy General Manager of the Robotics Division at Shanghai Electric Automation, emphasized the essence of embodied intelligence, which intertwines machine power and precision with human experience and judgment, fostering a genuine model of human-machine collaborative assistance. This paradigm shift is crucial in industries facing mounting complexity and demand for efficiency.
Shanghai Electric’s robotic offerings target five critical applications: connector insertion, electrical operations, flexible sorting, intelligent assembly, and pipeline processing. Among the highlights showcased:
1. Humanoid Biped Robot "SUYUAN": Boasting 41 degrees of freedom for enhanced mobility, SUYUAN is equipped with a multimodal visual detection system within its head and torso, alongside a dual hot-swappable battery system, making it ideal for inspection, handling, and assembly tasks.
2. Wheeled Humanoid Industrial Robot "TUOYUAN": With a foundational model based on embodied intelligence and a hybrid force-position control system, TUOYUAN excels at various tasks, including diverse connector insertions and material sorting, while efficiently loading and unloading automotive sheet materials.
3. Bionic Humanoid Robot "Mermaid": Capable of autonomously identifying buttons, knobs, and pneumatic switches, Mermaid generates operational trajectories in real time, enhancing precision in work environments.
4. Pipe Wall Beveling Robot: Designed for confined spaces, this autonomous robot can locate and process thousands of edge holes with millimeter precision, transmitting operational data in real-time, thus ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
Additionally, Shanghai Electric introduced key components including advanced energy production systems and terminal effectors. A standout feature was a planetary roller screw achieving over three times the load capacity compared to traditional ball screws, alongside the DexHand robotic hand, engineered to answer diverse gripping and manipulation needs.
Shanghai Electric also presented the "StarCloud Intelligent Manufacturing" series, launching 51 AI models and agents that encompass research and development, production and manufacturing, as well as operation and maintenance practices. These industrial agents are integrated with robotic decision-making systems and establish operational logic for native smart factories, translating industry expertise into digital capabilities that are reusable and unifying.
The offering promotes advancements in production chain planning, quality control, and predictive maintenance, marking a shift from experience-based to data-driven manufacturing systems. Complementing this initiative was the release of the "White Paper on Native AI Smart Factory Technology", proposing an active evolving architecture that facilitates real-time optimization of production data. This pioneering approach equips factories with capabilities for self-perception, decision-making, and execution.
The architecture presents three primary layers: the AI factory brain as the central control unit, industrial agents and embodied robots forming the execution network, and the physical twin acting as the digital mirror. With a firm commitment to its industrial expertise, Shanghai Electric aims to drive AI implementation across industrial environments and tackle technical challenges associated with embodied intelligence in complex scenarios, accelerating large-scale deployment of native AI smart factories. This vision includes delivering reproducible solutions adaptable to a variety of production settings.
