Groundbreaking for the New Net Zero Fort River Elementary School in Amherst, MA

Fort River Elementary School Project

The construction of a new Fort River Elementary School in Amherst, Massachusetts, has just begun, initiated by CTA Construction Managers. This project aims to create a cutting-edge learning space, aligning with modern educational needs and sustainability goals. With a total area of 105,750 square feet, the facility will cater to 575 students from kindergarten through fifth grade, effectively taking over from the existing Fort River and Wildwood Elementary Schools.

The design of the school reflects Amherst's commitment to sustainability. According to Donna DiNisco, President of DiNisco Design, the architectural firm behind the project, the school will be a Net Zero energy building. It will utilize advanced technologies, including photovoltaic panels mounted on the building and canopies, and a mechanical system powered by a ground-source heat pump supported by 85 geothermal wells. This innovative approach guarantees that the school will produce 100% of its energy needs on-site, supporting the town’s environmental objectives.

Paul Bockelman, the Town Manager of Amherst, emphasized the project's financial prudence. After receiving construction bids on September 17, 2024, the contract was awarded to CTA Construction Managers, who submitted the lowest bid at $73.48 million. This has resulted in projected savings of $4.8 million for the town.

Groundbreaking took place last month, and the construction crew is presently working on the concrete foundations with plans to follow up with the erecting of the steel structure. The new school is scheduled to open its doors to students in the fall of 2026. Following the completion of the new building, the existing structures will be demolished, with remaining site work expected to finish by late spring or early summer of 2027.

This development marks a significant milestone in Amherst’s efforts to establish high-quality educational facilities while promoting sustainable practices. Over the past two decades, DiNisco Design and CTA Construction Managers have collaborated effectively to complete numerous school projects, showcasing their ongoing commitment to education and environmental stewardship.
