Innovative Technologies for Addressing PFAS Contamination
On May 29th, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a significant seminar focused on advancing techniques aimed at mitigating PFAS contamination through the innovative method of fluorinated compound decomposition. This event will feature Professor Yoichi Kobayashi from Ritsumeikan University's College of Life Sciences, who will share insights into the latest developments in this crucial area.
Seminar Overview
The seminar will kick off with a detailed presentation that introduces a new technique for decomposing perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), specifically highlighting the decomposition of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and Nafion through fluorine ion reduction using semiconductor nanocrystals illuminated by visible LED light.
Professor Kobayashi's research indicates that exposure to 405 nm LED light for eight hours can lead to the complete defluorination of PFOS. Remarkably, this process manages to disintegrate an impressive 17,200 carbon-fluorine bonds per nanocrystal. Similarly, Nafion demonstrates a high efficiency with 81% defluorination achieved over 24 hours under visible light, showcasing the technology's efficient photocatalytic activity. The decomposition mechanism involves a complex interplay of hydrated electrons and high energy states, mediated by Auger-induced electron injection and light-induced ligand exchange.
