The Metamorphoses of Art: Celebrating CAA's 2025 Graduation Season

As we approach the vibrant season of 2025, the China Academy of Art (CAA) is bursting with vitality and creativity. Known for its innovative approach to art education, CAA has launched its spectacular event series titled Metamorphoses 2025 Graduation Season. The event is a celebration of change and creativity, combining traditional concepts with contemporary artistic expressions.

Embracing Change: The Theme of Metamorphoses

The overarching theme for this graduation season, Metamorphoses, is inspired by the Chinese philosophy of the seventy-two pentads, which celebrates change as an integral part of life. This philosophical backdrop emphasizes that while change is constant, the core of creation endures—a notion that resonates deeply within the artistic community. As this year’s graduates prepare to share their works, they embody the spirit of endless possibilities, vision, and creativity.

This year, the graduation exhibition was officially inaugurated on May 31. It spans seven major venues throughout Hangzhou, including the majestic campuses of Xiangshan, Liangzhu, and Nanshan. Other noteworthy venues include the Zhejiang Art Museum, the World Tourism Museum, the Quan Shanshi Art Center, and a citywide media exhibition zone. An impressive total of 2,971 graduates from 20 academic units participated, comprising 1,815 from undergraduate programs, 1,006 from postgraduate courses, and 150 from the affiliated secondary school. They presented over 3,000 works collectively, highlighting an extraordinary range of creativity and innovation.

A Celebration of Creativity

The opening night emerged as a unique experience, featuring a thematic performance integrated with a captivating fashion runway show, which unfolded dramatically under the rain—transforming the evening into a poetic and flowing spectacle. CAA President, Yu Xuhong, expressed that the graduation exhibition is a concentrated demonstration of the institution's development and an opportunity for these creative individuals to present themselves to the society. He emphasized the importance of such platforms in cultivating aesthetic education and the communal experience of creativity.

Immersive Artistic Experience

Artistic Director Liu Yihong, who also served as the Vice Dean of the School of Visual Communication, introduced an innovative stage design that deviated from conventional models. Rather than just an audience-facing setup, the design includes a four-sided immersive arena that embodies the theme of Metamorphoses. This fresh approach invites deeper engagement with the art, allowing viewers to experience the narrative from multiple perspectives.

Professors from the School of Fashion Design, including Chen Peng, Wang Shuying, Wu Jie, and Hu Nan, showcased 158 graduate fashion collections—further emphasizing the theme of transformation in both visual and wearable art. This collective presentation serves not only to highlight the talent of the students but to promote fashion as a dynamic form of artistic expression.

A Legacy of Innovation

CAA made history in 2009 by becoming the first art academy to display student works from all disciplines to the public through the introduction of Graduation Exhibition Week. This annual tradition aims to recommend exceptional talents to the broader society and to reinforce CAA as an “Unwalled Academy” that bridges internal and external resources seamlessly.

In these times, when global landscapes shift and new challenges arise, the spirit of creators takes on the vital role of forging the core of our lives while navigating artistic journeys. As we embrace the actions of these creators, we inevitably foster social innovation and engage with the currents of our era. The future of art promises to prosper through the dynamic interplay of diverse expressions, leading to infinite creative possibilities.

The exhibition is set to run through June 20, offering the public a chance to immerse themselves in this showcase of creativity and inspiration. As art continues to evolve, so does the legacy of the China Academy of Art, affirming its position at the forefront of the global art scene.
