Empowering Youths in Conflict Zones as Peacekeepers in Society

In a remarkable initiative to address conflict resolution and peacebuilding, Accept International, a Japan-based NGO, has been recognized for its impactful work in helping youths associated with non-state armed groups (YANSAG) reintegrate into society and become advocates for peace. This acknowledgment comes from the UN Economic and Social Council's recent feature titled "Bringing the Global Goals Home," which coincided with International Youth Day this August 12.

The founder, Yo Uei Nagai, highlighted the organization's unique approach to understanding the complex backgrounds of these young individuals. They operate in conflict-stricken regions such as Somalia, Yemen, Indonesia, Palestine, and Colombia, where many young people have been involved with armed groups. Through their work, Accept International has recognized that YANSAG often face a significant barrier to reintegration due to societal isolation and stigmatization following their involvement in violence.

Rather than viewing these youths merely as threats, Accept International believes they possess the potential to engage in meaningful peace initiatives, driven by their unique experiences. The organization aims to raise international awareness about the rights and empowerment of these young individuals, pushing for the establishment of international norms that support their reintegration into society as peace advocates.

Nagai emphasized the importance of connecting YANSAG with their local communities, stating, "In regions where peace agreements are extraordinarily challenging, YANSAG youths are often overlooked or merely seen as threats. Through our programs, we assist them in reconnecting with their communities and actively promoting sustained peace at the local level. If these unique peace advocates can emerge, we will witness a decrease in reliance on violence and an increase in youths who contribute to community building."

Accept International has been working since 2011 to dismantle the cycle of hate and violence that often ensnares these young people. They have organized several projects that explore the needs of marginalized groups, including Muslims and foreign residents in Japan. In regions where conflicts are prevalent, the organization supports YANSAG by fostering their transformation from participants in violence to proactive peacekeepers.

A core component of their work involves advocating for the rights of these youths on international platforms, enhancing their visibility as essential players in establishing peace. Recognizing that the task of reintegrating these individuals is arduous, Accept International also emphasizes the need for robust systems and support networks that help bridge the gap between veterans of conflict and their communities.

In their efforts, the organization encourages direct conversations with the youth, enabling them to share their stories and perspectives. This approach not only empowers the individuals involved but also educates communities about the challenges these young people face, aiming to shift perceptions.

The calls for a comprehensive societal response to assist these youths in their reintegration journey are becoming increasingly urgent as global conflicts remain a significant issue. Accept International functions with a strong belief that when communities support YANSAG, they contribute to a decrease in violence and a greater chance of achieving lasting peace. Over the years, countless success stories have emerged from their initiatives, underscoring the power of inclusive peace approaches.

With ongoing research and dialogue, Accept International continues to provide opportunities for engagement, including webinars and discussions on the current state of conflicts in regions like Somalia and Yemen. They invite media personnel and general public interest to engage in these discussions, aiming to create a shared understanding of these pressing issues and the critical role of youth in fostering peace.

Moreover, the organization relies significantly on the support of donations from the public, facilitating participation in their initiatives as Accept Ambassadors or through direct contributions. This support plays a crucial role in ensuring that the organization can sustain and grow its programs, helping those who need it most.

Accept International plays an essential role in fostering a new generation of peace advocates, transforming the narrative around YANSAG from threats to peacebuilders. With a commitment to inclusivity and empowerment, they pave the way for a more peaceful society. The power of their work signifies hope for future generations, emphasizing that each individual has the potential to contribute positively to their communities.
