CITYarts Unveils the Liberty Mural Celebrating U.S. Freedom at Freedom Plaza

On September 2, 2025, the New York City-based nonprofit CITYarts announced the impressive completion of the CITYarts Liberty Mural at the Path of Liberty That Which Unites US, located in the vibrant Freedom Plaza. This mural, which has been a labor of love involving over 35 students and community volunteers, marks an important milestone in a national peace initiative commissioned by The Soloviev Foundation. The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for September 12, from 7 PM to 9 PM, welcoming all community members and press.

The mural's artistic direction was led by Ivan Petrovsky, a multidisciplinary artist from Jersey City, known professionally as Mustart. With bold designs spanning four walls—each measuring 9 feet high and 40 feet long—and culminating in a rooftop installation, this mural captures vivid scenes portraying freedom, nature, unity, and peace. Completed during the warm summer months, this artwork serves as a testament to how art can unify communities by reflecting collective histories and nurturing visions of hope for the future.

Tsipi Ben-Haim, the Founder and Executive Director of CITYarts, shared the inspiration that propelled this mural project, emphasizing the importance of the Path of Liberty and the vital stories that have shaped American history. As the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary, CITYarts aims to pair this significant moment with its 50 States of Peace initiative—inviting youth across the nation to reimagine their local communities as embodiments of peace and interconnectedness.

Ben-Haim expressed her ardent belief that when children engage in creative endeavors, they channel their energy into constructive avenues rather than destructive paths—thus inspiring everyone around them.

Mustart echoed this sentiment, stating that the collaboration with young artists on this scale brought a wave of inspiration. Their enthusiasm and imaginative perspectives rejuvenated his belief that creativity resonates as one of the purest forms of freedom. He described the mural as a 'visual anthem' reflecting liberty, human history, and the innovative spirit of the younger generation.

This project not only aligns with CITYarts’ mission to engage youth in artistic expression but it also significantly contributes to local civic pride. Since its inception in 1989, CITYarts has actively engaged over 100,000 youth and mobilized more than 200,000 volunteers through its extensive portfolio of public art projects—totalling over 380 initiatives worldwide.

The Soloviev Foundation’s Michael Hershman, who stands at the helm of this partnership, expressed profound pride in collaborating with CITYarts for the Liberty Mural. He highlighted the role of art as a facilitator of dialogue examining historical nuances and encouraging transformation within communities. He encouraged the public to engage with the Liberty Mural and Path of Liberty initiative, which aims to materialize the ideals of freedom and peace, fostering communal dialogues and celebrating shared values and diverse experiences.

Striving for nationwide impact, the Liberty Mural is part of CITYarts’ broader 50 States of Peace initiative, which envisions a mural in every state collaborated upon by local youth and artists. This initiative is set to culminate in 2026 with the establishment of a National Peace Wall in Washington, D.C. The wall will feature 250 youth-created images and quotes from historical leaders, marking the U.S. Semiquincentennial and enabling a dialogue aimed at envisioning a generation rooted in unity and peace.

Tickets for the ribbon-cutting ceremony can be reserved through the CITYarts’ auction page, inviting the community to celebrate this significant moment together.
