ENGIE Partners with AstraZeneca for Sustainable Energy Supply in Texas

ENGIE's Collaborative Effort to Power AstraZeneca with Clean Energy

In a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions, ENGIE Resources, a prominent subsidiary of ENGIE North America, has finalized a nine-year renewable energy supply agreement with AstraZeneca, a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry. This partnership, which extends until 2034, is set to provide AstraZeneca's manufacturing facility located in Coppell, Texas, with a robust supply of renewable solar energy, further emphasizing the importance of environmentally responsible practices in corporate operations.

Details of the Agreement

Under the terms of this innovative agreement, AstraZeneca will procure renewable energy and Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from the Tyson Nick Solar Project, a remarkable 114 megawatt (MW) solar energy generator situated approximately 90 miles northeast of Dallas in Lamar County, Texas. This renewable energy supply initiative is projected to significantly mitigate environmental impact, with estimates suggesting a reduction of around 94,447 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. To put this figure into perspective, it equates to removing the emissions produced from burning an astounding 105 million pounds of coal.

The significance of this initiative cannot be overstated. It showcases AstraZeneca's unwavering commitment to sustainability and responsible environmental stewardship, aligning seamlessly with its goal to operate with minimal ecological footprint. By adapting renewable energy sources, AstraZeneca is demonstrating a clear leadership role in the pharmaceutical sector, setting a precedent for others to follow.

Leadership Messages

Anne-Laure Chassanite, CEO of ENGIE Resources, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the partnership, stating, "This collaboration exemplifies how leading organizations can align climate ambition with meaningful action. We are proud to deliver renewable energy in support of AstraZeneca's decarbonization goals, and we extend our gratitude to the dedicated teams that made this agreement possible."

Meanwhile, Jim Fox, Senior Vice President of Americas Supply Operations at AstraZeneca, echoed these sentiments, adding, "Securing renewable energy for our Texas operations enables AstraZeneca to lead by example in reducing emissions and fostering a resilient supply chain. This partnership illustrates how innovative thinking, shared values, and proactive measures can expedite the transition to cleaner energy, benefiting both our business and our communities."

AstraZeneca's Strategic Commitment

AstraZeneca represents a vital part of ENGIE’s strategic customer base, being one of nineteen global pharmaceutical accounts and one of the first companies to have its climate targets verified by the Science-Based Targets Initiative's Net-Zero Corporate Standard. This verification underlines the high standards AstraZeneca adheres to in terms of corporate responsibility, ensuring that their growth and operational strategies align with sustainable practices.

Kristine Robak, Key Account Director at ENGIE Resources, emphasized the privilege of working with AstraZeneca, remarking, "We are honored to partner with an organization dedicated to both human health and environmental sustainability. By delivering renewable energy, we aspire to support AstraZeneca's ambitious growth and sustainability objectives as they expand their manufacturing capabilities in the U.S."
