REI Systems Strengthens Data.gov Partnership with New Contract
REI Systems, alongside its joint venture partner ADG TECH CONSULTING, has secured the GSA Data.gov Technical Support (TSS) Contract continuation, solidifying a collaborative relationship that has lasted over 15 years. This contract, worth $3.5 million, was awarded after a competitive bidding process that included 13 other contenders, showcasing REI's in-depth expertise in federal open data initiatives.
Data.gov serves as the U.S. government's premier open data platform, providing unrestricted access to a vast array of datasets from various federal agencies. This platform not only encourages public exploration of government data but also promotes transparency and informed decision-making among citizens. Researchers, businesses, and developers utilize Data.gov to explore diverse subjects, innovate applications, and acquire information instrumental in economic growth, policy development, and public accountability.
Since its inception in 2009, REI has played a pivotal role in advancing Data.gov's development and modernization. The initial launch involved the ambitious construction of the platform's infrastructure over a mere five weeks. REI implemented a hybrid system to facilitate content management for agency uploads and created a data catalog for public searches. This dual approach enabled agencies to upload data efficiently while providing users with the capability to search for datasets from one unified platform.
Prior to the platform's go-live in May 2009, during which they released 47 datasets, REI ensured the system complied with necessary government certification and accreditation requirements. Today, Data.gov boasts an impressive inventory of over 301,700 datasets, establishing itself as a cornerstone of governmental transparency initiatives.
Over the years, REI has persisted in driving significant enhancements to Data.gov. In 2015, the company aided in migrating the platform's systems to Amazon Web Services (AWS), upgraded CKAN, initiated climate change projects, and improved website functionality as part of a $1.7 million contract.
In 2019, REI again won a TSS contract, focusing on further modernization of Data.gov, reinforcing its status as a crucial instrument for promoting open data and transparency.
Samidha Manu, Vice President of REI's Federal Civilian Business Unit, expressed pride in GSA's ongoing trust in their work on Data.gov, stating, "Modernization efforts across government are ensuring more accessible, discoverable, and usable data for the American public. REI has continually advanced open data by streamlining data harvesting, enhancing platform functionality, and upholding Data.gov's role as a bedrock of transparency."
The long-standing partnership underscores REI's commitment to the open data mission and its dedication to customer satisfaction. With team members actively engaged on this program for over a decade, REI guarantees continuity, expertise, and high-quality outcomes.
"Our proactive approach drives innovation, ensuring Data.gov stays aligned with the changing priorities of the government, establishing us as a trusted partner through various administrations," Manu added.
Under the newly awarded contract, REI will concentrate on operational and maintenance tasks aimed at augmenting efficiency, reducing costs, and enabling the government to maximize data use. These initiatives will allow Data.gov to evolve further as a platform while ensuring prompt and dependable access to critical government data for the public.
