Okayama University Kendo Team Achieves National Championship Qualification Again in 2026!
In a remarkable display of skill and perseverance, Okayama University's Kendo team, under the leadership of President Nasu Yasutomi, has once again earned a spot in the prestigious All Japan Student Kendo Championships. This achievement is particularly significant as it marks the second consecutive year of qualification for Nakamura Sota, a fifth-year student in the Medical Department, who showcased his exceptional talent at the 73rd Chugoku-Shikoku Student Kendo Championship held on May 17, 2026, at the Kawasaki Gakuen General Gymnasium.
Nakamura Sota competed fiercely among a total of 256 participants from 27 universities in this tournament, which was conducted in a knockout format. Securing a place among the top 20 competitors, he demonstrated outstanding resilience after facing challenges during the initial rounds. Despite a tough competition, he triumphed in the revival matches, winning two critical bouts and thereby establishing his position to compete at the national level once again.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, a humble Nakamura expressed his gratitude, remarking, “During this busy period with our department exams, there were times when I could not train as effectively as I would have liked. However, I made the most of my free time to practice diligently. I am thankful to everyone who trained alongside me, be it in club activities or during my individual drills.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on each match and noted the crucial support from his teammates, which helped him maintain composure even during the most physically demanding moments of the competition.
Nakamura also acknowledged the invaluable guidance and support from faculty members, including his instructor Nakata, as well as contributions from alumni and the broader community associated with the Kendo club. He is now determined to further improve his performance at the All Japan Championships, scheduled for July 4-5, 2026, at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.
As Okayama University's Kendo team looks forward to the upcoming national championship, anticipation builds around their potential achievements. The university community eagerly awaits to see how their hard work and dedication will unfold in July. With aspirations to advance further than the previous year, Nakamura and his teammates continue to train tirelessly.
In conclusion, this achievement not only reflects Nakamura's commitment and hard work but also highlights the unwavering spirit of the Okayama University Kendo team. We encourage all fans and supporters to rally behind the team as they take on the national stage once again.
