The prestigious Master’s Program in Coffee Economics and Science, named after the esteemed Ernesto Illy, has officially commenced its 15th edition in Trieste, Italy, welcoming 26 students from 20 different countries. This unique inter-university initiative, established through a collaboration between illycaffè and the Ernesto Illy Foundation, aims to provide comprehensive education on the intricate biological, agronomic, technological, and economic facets of coffee production, extending from cultivation to the final product.
A Diverse Group of Students
This year’s cohort includes bright talents hailing from agricultural regions like Brazil, Honduras, Colombia, and Ethiopia, alongside participants from various continents including Asia and Africa. The program primarily targets aspiring graduates in economics, engineering, and agricultural sciences, preparing them for influential roles within the global coffee industry.
New Leadership Under Gerardo Patacconi
Gerardo Patacconi has been appointed as the new Director of the program. His extensive knowledge of the coffee value chain, gained through significant roles at the International Coffee Organization (ICO) and UNIDO, positions him perfectly to guide the program's development and educational pathway. His commitment to nurturing young talent reflects the program’s overarching ambition to cultivate highly qualified professionals within the field of coffee.
An Extensive Curriculum
Spanning over 400 teaching hours, the academic curriculum comprises a blend of online and in-person classes that will eventually transition to physical attendance in May 2026. Participants will engage in in-depth projects related to the diverse subjects covered during their education, gaining hands-on exposure that enriches their learning experience.
Supporting Future Innovators
The collaboration between illycaffè and the Ernesto Illy Foundation is further supported by institutions such as the University of Trieste, the University of Udine, and SISSA, highlighting a significant institutional commitment to coffee education. Notably, 17 students benefit from partial scholarships courtesy of the Friuli Foundation, with 12 receiving full scholarships.

Since its inception, the Ernesto Illy Master's Program has welcomed over 290 students from more than 40 countries, contributing to the formation of specialists dedicated to sustaining illycaffè's ethical practices and promoting the sustainable quality of its coffee. The program continues to advance its mission of developing a new generation of leaders committed to environmental and social responsibility in the coffee sector.
