Huawei Digital Power Empowers ASEAN’s Green Energy Transformation with Innovative Grid Technologies

Huawei Digital Power Empowers ASEAN's Energy Transformation

From October 15 to 17, 2025, the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, under the theme "Powering ASEAN: Bridging Borders, Building Prosperity." The event, aimed at enhancing regional energy connections and promoting investment in clean energy, attracted over 1,500 participants including energy ministers, policymakers, industry representatives, and corporate leaders from ten ASEAN countries.

Huawei Digital Power Asia Pacific emerged as a key player in this initiative, showcasing high-quality solutions including Smart PV (Photovoltaic) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) adaptable to various scenarios. This gesture underlines their commitment to facilitating the region's transition towards a zero-carbon economy through advanced technological solutions.

In his keynote address on October 15, Xia Hesheng, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power, emphasized the vital role of grid-forming technologies in facilitating cross-border electricity trade across the ASEAN region. He underscored that integrating networks and enabling renewable energy transfer is essential for achieving carbon neutrality. Given the growing share of renewables in energy systems, factors such as stable energy transmission and consumption are becoming increasingly critical.

Huawei Digital Power has propelled the PV+ESS industry forward over the past decade, proactively moving towards active grid formation and establishing benchmarks for reliability and safety. Their innovations are exemplified in landmark projects, including the world's first GWh capacity microgrid at The Red Sea, a regenerative tourism mega-project in Saudi Arabia, which is 100% powered by green energy. In Cambodia, the first energy storage project with a capacity of 1 GWh, powered by Huawei Digital Power’s solution, recently earned TÜV SÜD certification.

Continuing their collaboration with ASEAN countries, Huawei aims to establish energy transformation standards through superior grid-forming technologies and high-quality products. During a roundtable discussion on strengthening ASEAN’s energy network resilience, Chen Xieming, a global energy network expert from Huawei, advocated for unified regional grid standards to bolster network security and facilitate ASEAN integration.

Moreover, Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power Malaysia, highlighted Malaysia's strategic role in the ASEAN energy network. By engaging in cross-border energy transactions with Thailand and Singapore, Malaysia has emerged as a critical hub for regional energy collaboration. He stressed the necessity for resilient and dynamic networks to realize the ASEAN energy network vision, reinforcing the importance of grid-forming technologies for resilience and adaptability.

Xia Hesheng reemphasized that to support a prosperous energy economy in ASEAN, there must be a robust and high-quality energy infrastructure coupled with appropriate policies and regulations. Huawei's grid solutions enhance short-circuit levels, stability, and recovery capabilities post-blackout through advanced connectivity technologies. For instance, in the Saudi Red Sea project, thousands of inverters operate in parallel mode, ensuring quick restoration of power within minutes following a blackout.

Huawei Digital Power has integrated protective elements into its energy storage systems, ensuring comprehensive safety from the cell level to the grid. Their intelligent string architecture and stringent quality controls lay a solid foundation for product security, with lifecycle quality management ensuring long-term system reliability. Notably, the Golmud project in Qinghai has maintained an impressive failure rate of less than 0.5% over 13 years of stable operation.

As Huawei Digital Power remains committed to advancing the PV+ESS industry in ASEAN, their high-quality products and end-to-end technologies are set to establish a global standard for energy transformation. A stable and effective energy foundation is crucial for ASEAN's green future. At AEBF-25, Huawei not only showcased its groundbreaking grid technology and system-level capabilities but reaffirmed its dedication to building a green, smart, and sustainable future. Moving forward, Huawei plans to double its investment in research and development while fostering collaboration with local partners to assist in transforming ASEAN’s energy mix, firmly believing that technology is key to realizing a zero-carbon world. With robust grid-forming technologies, Huawei Digital Power is positioned to be a reliable partner on this vital journey.
