New Release of 'Mojage To-san'

A much-anticipated new version of the picture book Mojage To-san has been confirmed for release by Nikomo, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Koyo Corporation, on May 1, 2025. Originally crafted by the talented author and illustrator Kuriko Momoto, this book was awarded the Excellence Prize at the inaugural YOMO Picture Book Awards, after competing with over 330 entries.

Synopsis

At a fun-filled camping trip, a family encounters an unexpected problem—while one father remains unbothered by mosquitos, his legs are curiously engulfed in a tangle of hair. This whimsical tale unfolds as dad boasts, “I can catch even more extraordinary creatures!” as he stretches his hairy leg out of the tent.

Message from Kuriko Momoto

In reflecting on the inspiration for this delightful work, Momoto shares a charming anecdote: “One summer, I noticed that a mosquito had gotten caught in my husband’s tousled leg hairs, unable to escape. When I teased him, saying, 'Wow, you caught a mosquito!', he replied, 'I could catch something even bigger.' This playful exchange birthed the narrative for Mojage To-san.

I pondered what intriguing creatures might inhabit our camping surroundings, allured by hair. While body hair is sometimes frowned upon, I believe it signifies an important aspect of our animalistic nature. My hope is that this picture book encourages a positive acceptance of hairiness. Winning the Excellence Prize in the YOMO Picture Book Awards has been a bright achievement for me and the book itself. I sincerely invite readers to pick it up and relish the whimsical journey it offers.”

About the Author

Kuriko Momoto, born in Osaka in 1976, honed her skills in picture book creation at the Picture Book Academy in Kego. She has been recognized in various competitions, including winning the Excellence Award at the 19th Pinpoint Gallery Picture Book Competition and being selected for the 2018 Oshima International Handmade Picture Book Competition. Her work Mojage To-san has received the Excellence Prize at the inaugural YOMO Picture Book Awards. She is currently based in Fukuoka, Japan, where she continues her passion for storytelling.
