Onko Chishin Acquires Island Inn Rishiri to Enhance Northern Japan Tourism

Onko Chishin Expands Its Hotel Portfolio in Hokkaido

Onko Chishin, a Tokyo-based company dedicated to creating destination hotels, has taken a significant step in promoting tourism in northern Japan by acquiring "Island Inn Rishiri," a lodging facility located on Rishiri Island, Hokkaido. This development comes through its subsidiary, Mitsui Tourism Co., Ltd.

Strategic Vision for Sustainable Tourism Development

The acquisition is a part of Onko Chishin's broader strategy to foster a sustainable tourism framework by linking Rishiri Island and Rebun Island. The synergy between its existing operation, the "Rebun Kanko Hotel Saku-Ryo" on Rebun Island, and the newly acquired hotel is expected to create a more cohesive tourism experience for visitors. This initiative is particularly crucial as the region grapples with challenges like declining population and seasonal tourism fluctuations.

Rishiri Island, located approximately 20 km west of Wakkanai City, boasts stunning natural scenery with Rishiri Mountain at its center—part of Japan's northernmost national park. Famous for its fresh seafood, including sea urchins and kelp, the island is a renowned spot for tourists seeking unique experiences in Hokkaido.

However, the lodging facilities, particularly on bordering islands, face significant challenges due to structural factors. The sustainability of these accommodations is crucial not only for the local tourism but also for the island's overall economic health.

Collaborative Efforts for Inter-Island Tourism

Onko Chishin believes that to enhance sustainable tourism on these islands, there needs to be collaboration beyond standalone operations. This forward-thinking approach intends to create a system where Rishiri and Rebun Islands support each other in tourism operations, workforce, and management, ultimately benefiting both local communities and visitors.

"Through our experience managing hotels on Rebun Island, we recognize the importance of inter-island collaboration to enhance the appeal and sustainability of our offerings," said Tomoki Matsuyama, CEO of Onko Chishin.

The company is committed to engaging with local communities and stakeholders to ensure that the operational framework at Island Inn Rishiri respects and enhances the unique values of the area.

Future Operations and Expansion

As for operations in 2026, the hotel will continue under the existing system while Onko Chishin prepares to transition it into its unique operational style. With the acquisition of Island Inn Rishiri, the company will manage four facilities on Japan's bordering islands, following their establishments of "Iki Retreat Kairi Mura-Kami by Onko Chishin," "Goto Retreat Ray by Onko Chishin," and "Rebun Kanko Hotel Saku-Ryo."

Onko Chishin's unique philosophy, "the small messenger of regional light," embodies their commitment to showcasing local attractions and fulfilling visitors' desire for authentic experiences. They have a vision to redefine travel experiences that focus on well-being and introspection, encouraging travel to remote areas and islands where guests can truly disconnect from their daily lives.
