ProgenyHealth Partners with Humana to Enhance NICU Care Management in Kentucky

ProgenyHealth, a leading women's health care company focused on maternal and NICU care management, has recently announced its collaboration with Humana Healthy Horizons in Kentucky. This partnership aims to provide specialized case management services for premature and medically complex infants, alongside support services for their families to improve health outcomes.

Kentucky's maternal and infant health is facing significant challenges, highlighted by a recent report from March of Dimes, which assigned the state a D- grade for pre-term births in 2024. The preterm birth rate in Kentucky stands at 11.3%, which is higher than the national average of 10.4%. This situation is attributed to a range of factors including women's physical and mental health, substance abuse, air pollution, and chronic health conditions.

Dr. Sarah Moyer, Chief Medical Officer of Humana Healthy Horizons in Kentucky, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “By collaborating with ProgenyHealth, we aim to provide extensive support to families dealing with the stress of a NICU stay. Our commitment is to enhance the health and well-being of our plan members and their families, especially during such uncertain times.”

This collaboration has already made an impact on several families. For instance, one member experienced a preterm delivery at eight weeks early due to pre-eclampsia. While her infant required NICU care, the mother faced difficulties securing a follow-up appointment for her high blood pressure. Thanks to her ProgenyHealth nurse case manager, she was able to arrange a same-day visit to her obstetrician and received further referrals to behavioral health after screening high for postpartum depression. Her case manager also linked her with a ProgenyHealth social worker who ensured she received essentials for the baby, including diapers, clothing, and a car seat.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Humana Healthy Horizons and help improve the lives of their members. The first year of an infant's life is crucial for their development, and we are dedicated to providing the necessary support to enhance maternal and infant health outcomes in Kentucky,” stated Susan Torroella, CEO of ProgenyHealth.

The program launched in late May and has already shown promising early signs of enrollment success among plan members. ProgenyHealth's technology-driven approach to maternity and NICU care management is grounded in over two decades of experience, employing board-certified physicians, nurses, and social workers to enhance maternal and infant health.

Overall, this partnership signifies a vital step in addressing the healthcare challenges faced by families in Kentucky, ensuring that parents receive the comprehensive care and support necessary during one of the most challenging times in their lives. By integrating services such as behavioral health and social support, ProgenyHealth and Humana are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable infants and their families throughout the region.
