Variation in Beauty Ingredient Preferences Among Women by Age and Life Stage

The concept of beauty is ever-evolving, particularly when it comes to the ingredients used in cosmetics. A recent survey conducted by Bizki Co., which operates the beauty and health information platform Kirei Style, explored the preferences of 2,000 women aged 20 to 59 across Japan regarding which cosmetic ingredients they intentionally avoid.

Commissioned by Kirei Style on April 22, 2025, this study aimed to understand the concerns surrounding cosmetic ingredients among women. Participants were asked a crucial question: "Which of the following ingredients do you avoid when purchasing cosmetics?" The options included a range of commonly debated ingredients, such as petroleum-based surfactants, preservatives like parabens, alcohol, fragrances, colorants, silicones, and animal-derived oils.

Key Findings


The results revealed an intriguing profile of preferences among the respondents. Among those who actively avoid certain ingredients, a notable 19.3% indicated that they steer clear of petroleum-based surfactants, closely followed by 19.1% who avoid preservatives. Alcohol came in third at 14.8%. However, a significant 60.6% of respondents went against the grain, stating that they do not have any specific ingredients they avoid in cosmetics.

Age-Based Insights


Analyzing the data through an age lens revealed deeper insights. Among the women who reported avoiding certain ingredients, the majority were in their 50s. This age group appears to be particularly sensitive to ingredient knowledge, likely fueled by years of skincare experience and a growing inclination towards organic and naturally derived products. In stark contrast, around 70% of respondents in their 20s reported having no ingredient aversions, suggesting they may have less experience with ingredient-related skin issues and prioritize cost-effectiveness when selecting products.

Parental Influence


The survey also examined the impact of motherhood on ingredient preferences. Women who are mothers showed a slight tendency to avoid certain ingredients more than those without children. This inclination may stem from a heightened concern for safety and health, especially regarding products used around children. High avoidance rates were notable for petroleum-based surfactants and preservatives, indicating that many mothers are aware of potential skin irritations for both themselves and their children.

Petroleum-based surfactants are commonly used for their cleansing properties, while preservatives prevent spoilage and inhibit mold and bacterial growth. Although regulated and considered safe in stipulated concentrations, sensitive skin types, particularly in children, may experience adverse reactions such as redness or irritation. This awareness may explain the increased caution seen among mothers in the survey.
