Exploring the Timeless Design of IXC's OZU Lounge Chair by Vico Magistretti

Introducing the OZU Lounge Chair by Vico Magistretti

On October 22, 2026, IXC, a prominent Italian-inspired design brand under Cassina IXC, will unveil the highly anticipated OZU lounge chair at their Aoyama flagship store in Tokyo. This unique piece, crafted by renowned architect and designer Vico Magistretti, made its initial debut as a prototype at the 3daysofdesign event in Copenhagen back in June 2026, captivating the design community’s attention. After much anticipation, it is set to be showcased and available for purchase in Japan for the very first time.

The Inspirational Journey of OZU

The design of the OZU lounge chair dates back to the mid-1980s. It represents the culmination of Magistretti’s creative visions and the meticulous preservation of original drawings at IXC. Their collaboration began through a shared passion for Japanese cinema and the work of legendary filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, enriching the design narrative that now resonates through this modern iteration of the chair. The chair’s design tells a story that transcends time, adding depth to its aesthetic appeal.

Characterized by its clarity of form, the OZU chair features a cantilevered steel frame that supports a soft, cushion-like seat and backrest. This innovative structure combines a lightweight appearance with a sense of robustness, rededicating the chair to its foundational principles. Magistretti’s structuralist design philosophy is evident in the deliberate separation of supporting elements from upholstered components, showcasing a minimalistic approach that emphasizes comfort through efficient design.

For this revival, molded polyurethane has been chosen to honor the original design approach while enhancing contemporary comfort standards. The result is a chair that gracefully merges a rich design heritage with modern lifestyle needs, subtly enhancing everyday living spaces.
