Pioneering Carbon Capture: Yoshikei's CO2-Eating Vending Machines

In a bid to promote a greener society, Yoshikei Group has launched Japan's inaugural "CO2-eating vending machines" in Ibaraki Prefecture. This groundbreaking initiative is a collaboration with Asahi Beverage Co., known for its commitment to sustainability. The vending machines are designed to absorb carbon dioxide, contributing to the country's carbon neutrality goals.

The Concept Behind CO2-Eating Vending Machines

Launched as part of a pilot project in June 2023, the vending machines are based on the innovative concept of creating forests within urban environments. Asahi Beverage aims to install around 50,000 units by 2030, with each machine capable of absorbing up to 60 kg of CO2 annually. This is equivalent to the carbon dioxide sequestration of approximately 20 cedar trees (ages 56-60 years). The technology underpinning these machines is patented (Patent No. 7282338), marking a significant advancement in carbon capture solutions.

The CO2 captured by these machines will be utilized in partnership with various municipalities and companies for an array of industrial purposes. This includes integrating the captured CO2 into asphalt and concrete, thereby contributing to the development of blue carbon ecosystems through applications like the restoration of marine habitat.

Contribution to Reducing Environmental Impact

Yoshikei Group has a history of operational sustainability, having provided original key-secured delivery boxes (Anshin Box) at no cost to customers. This initiative has led to a zero re-delivery rate and has fostered a reduction of CO2 emissions across the company’s fleet of approximately 4,700 delivery vehicles. With the introduction of the CO2-eating vending machines, Yoshikei Group continues to advocate for environmental responsibility and aims to support a transition to a carbon-neutral society.

In September 2023, the company was acknowledged for its environmentally friendly service and awarded the 32nd “Food Safety, Security, and Environmental Contribution Award” by the Japan Food Newspaper Association. This recognition continued into 2024, when Yoshikei was honored with the “Mothers Selection Award 2023” for being a convenient service for families, organized by the Japan Mothers Association. Furthermore, in December 2024, Yoshikei was lauded for its transformative impact on food loss prevention, securing the chairman's award at the 12th “Food Industry’s Waste Not Award” by the Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, Food Distribution Rationalization Promotion Organization.
