JAL and JTA Fuel Surcharge Adjustment for 2026
On June 12, 2026, Japan Airlines (JAL) and Japan Transocean Air (JTA) filed a request with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for a revision of the fuel surcharge that will come into effect from July 2026. This adjustment reflects fluctuations in the kerosene market and foreign exchange rates.
During the period from April to May 2026, the average market price for Singapore kerosene was noted at $178.21 per barrel. Taking into account the average exchange rate of 158.85 yen per dollar during the same period, the price converted into yen amounts to approximately ¥28,308. Based on this, the applicable Zone W (¥28,000 benchmark) will be considered. However, considering the extraordinary measures implemented by the government in light of the Middle Eastern situation, the revised fuel surcharge applicable to tickets issued for July and August 2026 will be set at the amount for Zone T (¥25,000 benchmark).
Overview of the International Fuel Surcharge
- - Applicable Period: For tickets issued between July 1, 2026 (Wednesday) and August 31, 2026 (Monday).
- - Fare Amount: The amount is applicable for one-way journeys originating from Japan (per person).
Revision Conditions
1. For tickets issued between July 1 and August 31, 2026, there will be no changes to the surcharge amount regardless of future fluctuations in aviation oil prices. However, changes may occur depending on government approval, including potential adjustments to the charged amount, revision timeline, and applicable duration.
2. Details regarding the fuel surcharge for tickets issued from September 2026 will be announced in August 2026.
Applicable Conditions
1. Both adults and children will bear the same fuel surcharge. Infants under the age of 2 who do not occupy a seat will be exempt from this charge. Additionally, customers using JAL Mileage Bank international award tickets will also be required to pay the same amount.
2. If a ticket is refunded after purchase, no cancellation fee will apply to the fuel surcharge.
