CAS and Microsoft Unite to Enhance Innovation in Pharma and Biosciences Through AI Integration

CAS Joins Forces with Microsoft to Boost Innovation in Life Sciences

On October 20, 2026, CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, revealed its latest initiative aimed at revolutionizing the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and chemistry sectors. The organization has introduced CAS Connections as an integrated feature within Microsoft Copilot. This innovative connector provides users access to the CAS Content Collection™ and CAS Newton™, an AI agent designed specifically for scientific applications.

This partnership between CAS and Microsoft represents a significant leap forward for research and development (R&D) teams striving to enhance their output in these crucial industries. The ability to harness curated scientific knowledge through Microsoft's AI capabilities allows researchers to work smarter and more effectively by tailoring scientific insights to their specific needs.

"Researchers working within pharmaceutical and chemical research depend on CAS for authoritative insights into substances, reactions, and targets," commented Tim Wahlberg, interim president of CAS. "With our collaboration with Microsoft, we are embedding this trusted knowledge directly into Microsoft Copilot, which will expedite the journey from initial concepts to groundbreaking drugs and materials."

Streamlining Research Efforts with Enhanced Integration

The CAS Connections feature is designed for deep integration into common front-end workflows. For instance, a chemist drafting the experimental section of a report in Microsoft Word can easily verify a compound’s CAS Registry Number® and check its structure, reaction conditions, and reagent availability via the CAS entries. This not only streamlines the documentation process but also enhances the accuracy of the information presented.

Additionally, intellectual property experts using Microsoft Teams can assess whether specific compounds appear in patent literature. Business development analysts presenting licensing information in Microsoft PowerPoint can seamlessly integrate insights about patent landscapes sourced from CAS's extensive database.

Chantrelle Nielsen, Principal Product Manager for the Copilot Platform at Microsoft, emphasized the need for trustworthy AI solutions grounded in reliable scientific data in these industries. "Our clients in pharma, biosciences, and chemistry require a platform they can trust. Integrating CAS into the Microsoft Copilot Connector ecosystem has been strategically important, as CAS represents a vital source of information for these customers," she stated.

Broader Integration for R&D Teams

Beyond Microsoft products, CAS Connections enables research and development teams to incorporate CAS’s rich content and CAS Newton into various tools that professionals use daily. These tools encompass electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), discovery platforms, and enterprise AI systems. CAS has launched this initiative in collaboration with multiple partners since June 2026, expanding its reach across various scientific communities.

Information is key in the fast-paced world of R&D. By providing easy access to trustworthy information directly within the tools they already use, CAS aims to empower scientists, patent teams, and business analysts to make more informed decisions.

For further exploration, the CAS-Microsoft Copilot Connector is available in the Microsoft Marketplace: Microsoft Marketplace.
