LOTTE Biologics Achieves Milestone with Completion of Songdo Bio Campus Plant 1

LOTTE Biologics Achieves Construction Milestone at Songdo Bio Campus

In Incheon, South Korea, LOTTE Biologics has proudly announced the successful completion of Plant 1 at its Songdo Bio Campus. This achievement marks a significant milestone as it secures approval for the facility after only two years of construction that began in 2024. This rapid development is noted as one of the most efficient timelines for biologics manufacturing facilities around the globe.

The approval validates that the construction of the facility has been finalized, incorporating detailed site development, civil engineering works, and the installation of production equipment, piping, electrical systems, as well as control systems. Since biologics manufacturing must adhere to complex cell culture protocols while upholding global cGMP standards, the construction demanded advanced engineering competencies and meticulous quality management practices.

Drawing from the operational insights and manufacturing expertise gained from its Syracuse Bio Campus in New York, LOTTE Biologics has strategically integrated this knowledge into Plant 1’s construction. An innovative automated Manufacturing Control System (MCS) was implemented from the design phase to bolster production efficiency and enhance the quality competitiveness of the new facility. Furthermore, this plant has been crafted to support customized client services in future commercial manufacturing scenarios.

Spanning a massive 120,000 liters, the antibody manufacturing plant is outfitted with cutting-edge equipment including eight 15,000-liter stainless-steel bioreactors that cater to extensive commercial production demands. The design incorporates advanced bioprocessing technologies, such as higher-titer cell culture and perfusion processes, thereby optimizing production capabilities. The facility also features an automated warehouse and real-time monitoring systems, crucial for maintaining operational stability and efficiency in manufacturing.

By implementing a dual-site strategy which interlinks the Songdo Bio Campus with the Syracuse Bio Campus, LOTTE Biologics is well-positioned to provide comprehensive Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) services. This approach allows seamless integration between early clinical production and substantial-scale manufacturing. The Syracuse Bio Campus will be responsible for initial-stage customer projects and clinical supply, while the newly established Songdo Plant 1 will serve as the backbone for large-scale commercial manufacturing.

LOTTE Biologics anticipates this dual-site framework will enable enhanced support for customers' regional supply strategies, especially as the demand for diversified supply chain risk management grows. Full-scale commissioning and production system validation is scheduled to initiate in the latter half of this year, paving the way for strong GMP manufacturing readiness and establishing a stable foundation to meet global customer demand effectively.

In a recent statement, James Park, CEO of LOTTE Biologics, credited the achievement to the capabilities of their workforce, dedicated project execution, and the collaborative support from the LOTTE Group. He emphasized that this achievement not only underscores their commitment to a global manufacturing platform that connects both Syracuse and Songdo but also solidifies their position as a trusted CDMO partner worldwide.

With a focus on creating an integrated system that emphasizes speed, quality, and flexibility, LOTTE Biologics aims to proactively meet the diverse needs for development and commercialization presented by global customers, ensuring their growth into a world-class CDMO company.
