As the annual Hajj pilgrimage unfolds in Makkah, Saudi Arabia has mobilized an impressive response to safeguard the health of the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gathering for this monumental event. According to the Ministry of Health, an astonishing 111,400 medical services have already been delivered in just the initial days of Hajj. Among these innovations are drones capable of delivering medical supplies within just five minutes, artificial intelligence for diagnostic purposes, and wearable devices that monitor the health of vulnerable individuals.
The health infrastructure supporting the Hajj includes a staggering 183 medical facilities, 900 ambulances, and 11 air ambulance helicopters prepared for emergency interventions. Notably, the first WHO-certified Special Medical Disaster Assistance Team in the Middle East is on standby, further enhancing the preparedness for any health emergencies that may arise.
To facilitate quick patient transport, Saudi authorities have installed ambulance elevators at key locations, such as the Jamarat Bridge, allowing critical patients to be evacuated directly to rooftop helipads. Additionally, the number of helicopter landing pads has doubled to six, significantly enhancing rapid evacuation capabilities across the holy sites.
The Seha Virtual Hospital, recognized as the largest in the world, connects 224 facilities for remote consultations, providing unprecedented access to healthcare for pilgrims. Furthermore, the introduction of new PET-CT scanners and robotic surgeries, which have only recently begun at King Abdullah Medical City, highlights the Kingdom's commitment to cutting-edge healthcare.
Managing the Risks of Heat and Crowds
With the Hajj taking place during the heat of summer, Saudi Arabia has also been proactive in mitigating the risks associated with extreme temperatures. The Kingdom has planted thousands of trees and installed hundreds of cooling stations, along with implementing the world's largest air conditioning system in the Grand Mosque. Volunteers are dispersing umbrellas to pilgrims while promoting hydration and strategies for managing the crowds effectively.
Early indications suggest that these collaborative efforts, including crowd management plans, have resulted in a lower incidence of heat exhaustion cases this year. The Ministry of Health has commended the hard work of various bodies, including the Royal Commission for Makkah and the Ministry of Hajj, for their coordinated efforts in enhancing shaded areas and ensuring the safety and comfort of those attending the pilgrimage.
