University of Maryland Unveils Ambitious $2.5 Billion Fundraising Campaign for Innovation and Inclusion

University of Maryland Launches the 'Forward' Campaign

On November 3, 2025, the University of Maryland proudly announced the commencement of its most extensive fundraising campaign to date, known as Forward: The University of Maryland Campaign for the Fearless. This ambitious initiative aims to raise a staggering $2.5 billion to not only advance the university's vision and values but also to make education more accessible, bolster groundbreaking research, and foster a global community committed to positive change.

The Forward campaign is built around three key themes:

1. ## Expanding Opportunities for Tomorrow's Trailblazers
This segment of the campaign focuses on enhancing educational access, specifically designed to prepare future leaders and innovators for a rapidly changing job market. The emphasis here is on inclusivity and developing skill sets that are crucial for success in various fields.

2. ## Pioneering Bold Solutions
The second theme centers on driving innovation and discovery. Here, the university intends to tackle pressing global challenges through groundbreaking research in fields like artificial intelligence and quantum science. By investing in these domains, the campaign aims to transform how we perceive and address the most critical issues in society today.

3. ## Strengthening Community Bonds
The final aspect emphasizes deepening the school spirit among students, elevating the university's commitment to athletics, arts, and civic engagement. The goal is to promote a sense of community that encourages students to contribute positively to society and foster connections that extend beyond academic pursuits.

According to University President Darryll J. Pines, this campaign is a pivotal turning point for the institution, enhancing the capabilities of students, faculty, and staff. “The Forward campaign is not just about fundraising; it’s about reshaping the educational landscape and redefining how our community engages with challenges and opportunities in the world,” Pines remarked.

This initiative is starting on solid footing, having already secured $943 million since November 2021 from various benefactors, including the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation as well as prominent alumni. Their contributions have laid a firm foundation for future growth, allowing the university to teach vital skills alongside cutting-edge subjects.

Jennifer King Rice, Senior Vice President and Provost, highlighted the aspirations of the campaign: “The heart of the Forward campaign lies within realizing the potential of people—the discoveries they will make, the lives they will touch, and the communities they will serve.” This reflects a larger mission to embrace large-scale challenges and nurture a better future for all students.

The Forward campaign is part of a strategic vision developed in 2022, aiming to further advance the university’s public service impact. It builds on the success of previous fundraising efforts, which raised over $1.5 billion through the Fearless Ideas campaign.

Reflecting on the campaign's intent, campaign co-chair Jimmy Reyes ('85) commented, “This is about creating a future bright enough for the dreams that energize our campus,” emphasizing the fearless spirit of Maryland that permeates every discipline.
