Legacy Healthcare Achieves Milestone with CINAINU®
On October 13, 2026, Legacy Healthcare made a significant announcement regarding its investigational product, CINAINU®, a botanical solution that aims to treat moderate-to-severe alopecia areata in individuals aged two years and older. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation for CINAINU®, which reflects its potential to provide substantial improvements over existing treatments.
The Breakthrough Therapy Designation was made possible by the RAAINBOW Phase 2/3 trial, a robust clinical study involving 107 children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 17. The trial employed a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled approach, which is critical for assessing the efficacy and safety of new treatments. This designation accelerates the development and review process for therapies that show promising effectiveness compared to currently available options, emphasizing the urgency of addressing patients’ needs.
A Transformative Treatment for Alopecia Areata
Currently, the only approved treatment options available for alopecia areata are oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. These medications, however, are limited in scope as they only cater to adults and adolescents with severe cases. Moreover, they present significant risks; discontinuation of these oral JAK inhibitors can lead to rapid hair loss, and they come with serious warnings from the FDA regarding potential side effects, including infections and cardiovascular events, raising concerns about patient safety.
In contrast, CINAINU® has been developed to address both moderate and severe cases of alopecia areata across all age groups. Preliminary results from the initial Phase 2/3 trial have shown promising outcomes, with participants experiencing meaningful hair regrowth and a favorable tolerability profile. This data positions CINAINU® as a first-line treatment option for patients of various ages suffering from hair loss due to alopecia areata. Furthermore, executing a global pivotal Phase 3 program is part of Legacy Healthcare's ongoing commitment to validate CINAINU® on a larger scale.
Legacy Healthcare's Commitment to Innovation
CEO Saad Harti expressed optimism regarding the FDA’s decision, viewing it as a pivotal step for both the company and those affected by alopecia areata. He stated, “Our ambition is to offer patients meaningful hair regrowth, favorable tolerability, and sustained benefits after treatment ends, potentially providing a new, transformational treatment option across a broad age and severity range.” This commitment underlies Legacy Healthcare’s mission to innovate in the field of biopharmaceuticals, particularly in areas with significant unmet medical needs.
CINAINU® stands out not only as a potential treatment option for alopecia areata but also as a pioneering botanical drug, being the first of its kind to receive Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the FDA. This signifies a substantial regulatory recognition that might pave the way for similar botanical therapies in the future.
As the company seeks to conduct further clinical investigations, Legacy Healthcare remains steadfast in its dedication to bringing innovative solutions to the forefront of therapeutic options available to individuals afflicted by diseases that have previously seen inadequate responses from existing treatments.
