ETERC Unveils Ele: A Revolutionary AI Mentor for Engineering Education in Public Schools

In a groundbreaking move, the Shanghai Modern Engineering and Technology Education Development Research Center (ETERC) has unveiled its AI mentor, Ele, aimed at enhancing personalized engineering education specifically for students in underserved public schools. This initiative was announced during the National Society for the Study of Education Research Review Seminar, showcasing ETERC's commitment to tackling the challenges faced by public schools in delivering quality STEM education.

The traditional classroom model, where one teacher manages a large number of students, often leaves individual guidance by teachers unattainable. This is particularly true in rural areas, where students have limited access to qualified educators in specialized fields such as aerospace and robotics. Overcoming these educational barriers requires innovative approaches, and Ele is designed precisely for this goal.

Ele is not just another chatbot; it represents over 12 years of ETERC's experience in STEM teacher training and curriculum development. With a wealth of resources including over 5,000 hours of high-quality teaching recordings and countless lesson plans formulated by educators and industry specialists, Ele stands out as a powerful support tool. The design of this AI mentor emphasizes guiding students through problem-solving processes, fostering independent decision-making, and encouraging learning through experience rather than rote memorization.

Having already seen practical application in classrooms for several months, Ele has allowed ETERC to refine its capabilities in assisting both students and teachers. Insights gained from these experiences underscore Ele's role in providing differentiated support, helping educators pinpoint areas where students may need additional assistance.

"Our mission is to not merely create another educational chatbot but to establish an AI mentor embedded in genuine teaching practices and grounded in engineering education research," said Wan Jiawei, ETERC’s founder. The aim is to make personalized mentorship more accessible while upholding the teacher's authority and the student's ability to think critically.

The conceptualization of Ele aligns with two emerging research frameworks ETERC is delving into: Engineering Becoming Learning Science (EBLS) and Engineering Becoming Theory (EBT). EBLS investigates the development of engineering thought through authentic problem-solving and experiential learning, while EBT scrutinizes how students build their identities in engineering fields. Both frameworks remain in developmental stages and will continue to be evaluated through ongoing research and classroom implementations.

As a nonprofit organization championing educational equity, ETERC has collaborated with global enterprises for over a decade to create enriching STEM educational experiences. The introduction of Ele is a significant step toward supporting disadvantaged schools, allowing corporations to get involved by sponsoring the deployment of Ele or co-developing engineering course content that relates to real-world applications.
