About Yosuke Yamashita
Yosuke Yamashita, who formed the Yosuke Yamashita Trio in 1969, has made a remarkable impact on the jazz scene with his energetic, free-form performances. Collaborating with both domestic and international jazz artists as well as traditional Japanese taiko and symphony orchestras, he showcases a versatile talent unique in the music industry.
In 1988, he established the Yosuke Yamashita New York Trio, leading to performances across the globe. His career highlights include collaborations with the renowned Ornette Coleman in 2006 and Cecil Taylor in 2007.
In 2008, he premiered his
Piano Concerto No. 3 'Explorer' and in 2009, his
Piano Concerto No. 4 'JAZZ', composed by Keiichiro Ueyama. His performance with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna, conducted by Yutaka Sado in 2016, further solidified his status in the international music community.
Yamashita has released numerous albums, including his significant
30 Light Years of Floating in 2018, celebrating three decades of his New York trio. Additionally, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his trio formation in 2019 and released his solo piano album,
Quiet Memories, in 2020.
While receiving accolades such as the
Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for Fine Arts in 1999, and recognition by the
Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays in 2012, he continues to inspire new generations as a visiting professor at
Kunitachi College of Music.
