Vanguard Renewables Launches New Biogas Facility in Minnesota to Drive Sustainability
Vanguard Renewables, a prominent player in the field of environmental services, has commenced the development of its latest anaerobic digestion facility in Litchfield, Minnesota. This initiative marks a significant step in the company’s journey towards expanding its contributions to renewable energy through the production of biomethane derived from organic waste. On June 4, 2026, Vanguard Renewables celebrated the groundbreaking of this facility, which underscores its commitment to providing sustainable solutions in the Midwest, a region characterized by a dense concentration of agricultural production and food manufacturing.
The new facility is designed to handle an impressive volume of over 300 tons of food and beverage waste daily. This will not only assist local manufacturers, retailers, and distributors in managing their waste more sustainably but is also in response to increasing regulatory pressures and commitments to sustainability. By employing anaerobic digestion technology, the facility will convert organic waste into renewable natural gas as well as nutrient-rich fertilizer, thereby fostering a closed-loop system. This process is crucial for connecting waste diversion efforts with local energy production and regenerative agricultural practices.
Once operational, the facility is expected to generate around 270,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas annually. To put this into perspective, this amount of energy would be sufficient to meet the energy needs of approximately 5,300 households. Additionally, the facility will integrate with CenterPoint Energy's distribution system, which serves close to a million customers in Minnesota. The Vice President of Utility Strategy at CenterPoint Energy, Muss Akram, remarked on the partnership, highlighting how this renewable energy initiative represents a significant stride towards lowering emissions and providing cleaner energy options for homes and businesses.
The project is a collaboration with TotalEnergies, combining Vanguard Renewables’ expertise in organics recycling and biomethane production with TotalEnergies’ extensive experience in energy development. Marc de Lataillade, Vice President of Biogas at TotalEnergies, expressed excitement about the joint venture, emphasizing their shared commitment to advancing low-carbon energy solutions throughout the United States.
The facility will be situated on Wagner Dairy, a family-run farm that has been operational since 1887. This partnership exemplifies Vanguard Renewables’ approach to integrating anaerobic digestion systems within agricultural settings to provide environmental and economic advantages on a local scale. The facility’s operation will not only generate renewable energy but also produce a nutrient-rich byproduct that can be used as a natural fertilizer. This sustainable farming practice helps decrease reliance on synthetic fertilizers and reduces operating costs for numerous acres of farmland.

Moreover, this development promises to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation in the local area. Construction efforts are anticipated to support around 100 jobs, with about 10 permanent positions expected to be available when the facility becomes operational.
Vanguard Renewables has identified the Midwest as a crucial area for renewable energy development. Their research suggests that this region alone holds the potential to produce a staggering 1,580 trillion Btu of renewable natural gas, exceeding the current size of the RNG market by more than eight times.
