The 18th Lyon Biennale: Celebrating Diversity in Contemporary Art
The Lyon Biennale is set to host its 18th edition from September 19 to December 13, 2026, under the evocative theme "To Pass from One Dream to Another." This year's event will feature a total of 118 artists, with 45 making their Biennale debut. Notably, 68% of the participating artists are women, showcasing a commitment to gender diversity within the arts. This year’s Biennale emphasizes not just the quantity but also the diversity of artistic expression represented, aiming to reflect a multitude of practices and backgrounds from all over the globe.
A Showcase of Global Talent
This Biennale marks a significant moment for art in Lyon, as it brings together creators from 42 different countries, including Germany, Argentina, South Korea, and Peru, among others. The inclusion of 23% of artists under the age of 35 highlights a vibrant mix of emerging talents alongside seasoned professionals. Each artist will present unique works that range from installations to performances, making the exhibition a lively and varied experience for all who attend.
The featured artists include Carla Adra, Yasmeen Al Daya, and Monira Al Qadiri, demonstrating a broad spectrum of styles and concepts. Additionally, the program includes 65 original works and 12 newly adapted pieces, ensuring that attendees will experience both innovation and adaptation in contemporary art.
The Emerging Artists Program
An essential highlight is the participation of the "Jeune Création Internationale" program, which has been nurturing young talent for over two decades. This initiative invites a selection of emerging artists to debut their work in a professional setting, fostering their growth and exposure in the art world. Supported by regional and international curators, these artists will display new creations, solidifying the Biennale's role as a launchpad for future art stars.
New Exhibition Spaces
The Biennale will also introduce an 11th venue, Cour des Loges Lyon, a historic site in Vieux Lyon renowned for its Renaissance architecture. This new space will resonate with the artistic theme, inviting visitors to engage with art in a space steeped in history. The majestic courtyard and unique ambiance will enhance the experience, allowing for reflective interactions with contemporary practices amidst a backdrop of rich heritage.
Other notable venues include the Musée d’art contemporain, the Institut d’art contemporain, and the Jardin du musée des Beaux-Arts, each providing a diverse setting for exceptional artistic encounters. The inclusion of outdoor exhibitions and installations across various locations further enriches the accessibility and enjoyment of the Biennale.
Professional Days and Ticketing
Professionals in the art field can attend dedicated days on September 17 and 18, with access granted through accreditation, which also includes entry to the opening night on September 18. Early bird tickets will be available from June 29 to July 15, 2026, at a reduced price of €20, allowing for admission to the main exhibition venues. This initiative aims to encourage engagement from both local and international audiences, promoting a shared appreciation for contemporary art.
The 18th Lyon Biennale promises to be a landmark event that not only showcases artistic diversity but also strengthens Lyon's growing reputation as a pivotal hub for contemporary art. With its wide-ranging representation of artists, innovative works, and the engaging atmosphere of its historical venues, this Biennale is a not-to-miss cultural celebration.
