CATL Unveils World’s First 9 MWh Large-Scale Energy Storage Solution TENER

CATL Unveils the Revolutionary TENER Stack

In a remarkable advancement in energy storage technology, CATL has introduced the TENER Stack, the world's first large-capacity energy storage system with an impressive 9 MWh capacity. Announced at the ees Europe 2025 fair in Munich, this innovative solution blends high storage capabilities with flexible transport options, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

As global energy demands surge, particularly from AI-driven data centers and industrial electrification, the TENER Stack is designed to provide utilities, developers, and industrial users with enhanced economic value for every square meter of installation. According to Amanda Xu, head of ESS technology and president of ESS Europe at CATL, the TENER Stack addresses the growing need for energy storage systems that offer high energy density, compact design, simplified AC-side configuration, and flexible deployment options, effectively overcoming limitations in energy capacity and product transport.

Revolutionary Capacity and Compatibility

The TENER Stack features CATL's state-of-the-art high energy density cells, supported by five years of zero degradation technology. This enables a remarkable 45% improvement in volume utilization and a 50% increase in projected energy density compared to conventional 20-foot container systems. With an internal capacity sufficient to charge up to 150 electric vehicles or power an average German household for six years, the TENER Stack redefines what’s possible in energy storage.

Moreover, the system supports both centralized and string-based Power Conversion System (PCS) architectures, ensuring seamless integration with AC equipment and a broader range of grid applications. The increased spatial efficiency not only cuts down the number of required containers for large storage deployments but also enhances land-use efficiency by up to 40%, promising a potential 20% reduction in overall station construction costs for developers.

Uncompromising Transport Solutions

CATL has also innovatively tackled the logistical challenges tied to transporting containers exceeding 36 tons, a common legal threshold in many countries. Their 'two-in-one' design keeps each unit strictly below this weight limit, complying with transportation regulations in 99% of global markets. This split design allows for the use of standard shipping methods, reducing waiting times and specialized transport costs by up to 35%.

With a lower center of gravity and flexibility for restricted height routes, the TENER Stack adapts effortlessly to unique transport scenarios such as bridges and rural areas, showcasing the advantages of its structural innovation.

Advanced Safety and Thermal Management Standards

In an era where fire safety is under scrutiny, the TENER Stack capitalizes on CATL's robust LFP battery chemistry, known for its intrinsic thermal stability. Enhanced gas sensors provide 40% more sensitivity and activate extinguishing systems 35% faster. Furthermore, a new triple-layer insulation design boosts fire resistance to two hours, and the system adheres to seismic standards IEEE693, capable of enduring magnitude 9 earthquakes and category 5 hurricanes.

Additionally, an elevated Thermal Management System minimizes thermal radiation, further decreasing land and maintenance costs, while maintaining noise levels at a manageable 65 dB(A) at one meter, making it ideal for urban use.

More Than Just Batteries; A Vision for Energy

By the end of November 2024, CATL's ESS products had been deployed in over 1,700 projects worldwide, catering to all climatic zones and operational environments. In response to evolving customer needs, CATL had previously introduced TENER, a container storage system with zero degradation technology, and TENER FLEX for flexible deployment. The TENER Stack builds on the successful performance of these previous models, combining their benefits with newfound levels of capacity and transportability.

With the TENER Stack, CATL reaffirms its dedication to aiding global partners in accelerating the energy transition, providing more power in less space, safely and sustainably. Hank Zhao, the technology head of ESS Europe at CATL, emphasizes that "TENER Stack is not just an energy storage product, but a global solution for energy accessibility." He adds, "The 9 MWh capacity is not a limit, and future advancements in energy density will unlock even greater energy value from a smaller footprint."
