According to SoCalGas, the upgrades made under this program include installations of high-efficiency water heating technologies, such as tankless water heaters, and insulation for hot water pipes and tanks. One standout participant in this program is the Colton Joint Unified School District. Over the past three years, the district has implemented more than 150 energy efficiency measures across its facilities, including the installation of 84 high-efficiency tankless water heaters. As a result of this replacement, the district has successfully decreased its natural gas consumption by approximately 20%, leading to savings of over $800,000 through various incentives provided by the program. Jay Kim, the Energy Programs, Grants, and Sustainability Officer for the district, expressed that the funds saved through energy upgrades allow maintenance budgets to be redirected towards educational resources such as art projects, science kits, and musical instruments.

A Collective Impact on Energy Use


In 2025, the PDIP accounted for the installation of over 2,000 energy-efficient measures spanning 845 different projects. This effort has contributed to a significant reduction in energy usage, with an estimated decrease of around 16.3 million net therms throughout the lifetime of the installed equipment. This amount of energy savings equates to the energy consumption of roughly 11,500 typical residential homes for a year.

Andrew Steinberg, SoCalGas’ director of customer programs and assistance, emphasized the importance of managing energy costs, particularly for public-serving organizations. By enabling these participants to invest in energy efficiency improvements, the program allows more financial resources to be diverted toward other vital community services and initiatives.
