Conducted internationally, the SLI surveys 6,000 consumers across 12 different markets, including prominent regions such as the UK, Germany, France, and South Africa. Economic Pressures as a Driving Force


The findings demonstrate that financial burdens are the foremost driver for adopting sustainable household behaviors. Eight out of twelve markets identified energy costs as a major environmental concern impacting their daily lives. The study highlights that households feel these challenges most acutely through the strain of rising energy bills, revealing a direct connection between financial stability and the push for more sustainable living.

Shifts in Consumer Perspective


Over the past year, consumers have reported a transformation in their attitudes towards purchasing household appliances, with an increased emphasis on long-term affordability and sustainability. Countries where individuals actively monitor appliance operating costs show a higher acceptance of smart features. In contrast, consumers in regions less engaged with their energy usage tend to lag in adopting smart technologies, opting instead for energy-saving habits like air-drying laundry or washing dishes by hand.

Global South Leads the Charge


Interestingly, the study finds that consumers in developing countries, including Egypt, Thailand, and Pakistan, exhibit a greater enthusiasm for smart living compared to their Western counterparts (like the UK, Germany, and France). This gap highlights how cultural attitudes towards technology and sustainability differ based on regional development.

Trust in Technology


Despite understanding the environmental benefits, consumer trust in AI-powered devices remains low in key European markets. Less than 20% of consumers trust these technologies, which indicates a critical need for the industry to address this trust gap to maximize the potential of smart devices in promoting sustainable living.

Traditional Saving Methods in Demand


A notable portion of respondents reported replacing appliances or resorting to alternatives for energy savings. For instance, roughly two-thirds of respondents in many countries prefer line-drying their clothes rather than using electric dryers. This trend emphasizes the persistence of traditional, low-tech solutions in an increasingly high-tech world.

Age vs. Income Paradox


The SLI findings illuminate an intriguing paradox: while energy-saving behaviors increase with age, they tend to decrease with rising income levels. Notably, individuals aged 54 and older are leading all energy-saving measures, challenging the assumption that younger generations are more engaged in sustainability.

Call for Government Support


A significant majority—over 50% of participants across all markets—expressed that governmental assistance is essential for transitioning households towards resource-efficient appliances. This sentiment underscores the notion that policy support is crucial for easing the burden of financial constraints on consumers.

Enthusiasm for Future Innovations


Regions such as Thailand (81%), Pakistan (86%), and Turkey (80%) displayed the highest enthusiasm for advanced smart devices. In contrast, European nations like Germany, the UK, and France displayed comparatively lower interest in smart innovations. However, there is a collective agreement on the preference for innovations that are self-cleaning or energy-generating.

In response to the study's release, Beko's CEO Hakan Bulgurlu highlighted the critical need to bridge the trust gap associated with smart technology benefits.
