Empowering the Future: Innovations in Grid-Forming Technology at International Digital Energy Expo

A New Era of Energy Solutions: Insights from the International Digital Energy Expo

The third edition of the International Digital Energy Expo (IDEE) officially kicked off today in Shenzhen, bringing together industry leaders, organizational representatives, think tank experts, clients, and partners from around the globe. The event is a platform for dynamic discussions on cutting-edge industry trends, innovative technological applications, and best business practices aimed at fostering the high-quality development of the digital energy sector.

During the opening ceremony, Zhou Jianjun, Vice President of Huawei and President of Global Marketing, Sales, and Services of Huawei Digital Power, delivered an insightful keynote address titled, “Grid-Forming Technology for All Scenarios: Accelerating Wind and Solar as Major Energy Sources.” Zhou emphasized that carbon neutrality has transitioned from a mere consensus into actionable steps, with a significant rise in the penetration rates of wind and photovoltaic energy creating challenges within power grids due to the increased demand for renewable energy and power electronics.

To address these challenges, Huawei is leveraging ongoing technological innovations and expertise to enhance its grid-forming capabilities across various scenarios. This initiative aims to facilitate the construction of a stable new energy system, heralding a new era where wind and solar energy can emerge as primary energy sources.

Advancing Grid-Forming Technologies

As a key technology provider, Huawei has invested over a decade in researching grid-forming technologies. The company is actively promoting the shift from traditional grid-following and grid-supporting paradigms to grid forming. By integrating self-developed core hardware—such as highly reliable high-overload power devices and intelligent digital control systems—with robust architecture and intelligent grid-forming algorithms, Huawei has established six key grid-forming functionalities tailored for energy generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. These functionalities include:
  • - Short-Circuit Level Control
  • - Virtual Inertia Support
  • - Broadband Damping
  • - Primary Frequency Response
  • - Seamless Start-Up
  • - Smooth Transition Between Connected and Disconnected States

These innovative grid-forming technologies are already being widely utilized and commercially distributed across the globe, setting benchmarks for global green transitions. For instance, in the Middle East, close to the Red Sea, Huawei’s grid-forming technologies have empowered customers to establish the world’s largest electric microgrid, fully powered by renewable energy. This microgrid has reliably operated for two years, maintaining electrical supply through adverse weather conditions without interruption.

In a significant project located in Tibet, China, a 30 MW photovoltaic system combined with a 6 MW/24 MWh energy storage system saw Huawei help a client implement a grid-forming ESS solution in challenging high-altitude, extremely cold, and weak grid environments, boosting photovoltaic output from 1.5 MW to an impressive 12 MW. Compared to alternative solutions, Huawei’s technology integrated an additional 75% of energy, which greatly enhanced project revenues.

Moreover, the largest integrated PV+ESS project globally has been launched in the Philippines. It consists of 3.5 GW of photovoltaics coupled with 4.5 GWh of grid-forming ESS, utilizing Huawei's coordinated PV+ESS control technology capable of delivering constant power for up to 13 hours daily.

Commitment to Leading Digital Innovation

Huawei's dedication to ushering in a smarter and more digitalized energy sector is unwavering. The company has pioneered the first full-link synergy from device to edge to cloud for PV and ESS intelligence, enabling smart management throughout the entire lifecycle of power plants. This approach drastically reduces the need for operator interventions while maximizing energy trade revenues. The deep integration of AI throughout the planning, construction, maintenance, and operational phases has mitigated implementation errors by 40%, enhanced operational efficiency by 50%, and boosted operational revenues by over 10%. These milestones pave the way for clients to construct secure, efficient, and intelligent renewable energy facilities, enhancing the sector's journey into an era of automation.

Huawei Digital Power is committed to quality as the cornerstone of sustainable sector growth. The company prioritizes excellence, utilizing systematic, process-based capabilities and an end-to-end quality strategy to consistently deliver greater value throughout the product lifecycle— from demand definition and material management to manufacturing and delivery.

Moving forward, Huawei Digital Power will continue to work collaboratively with industry authorities, grid operators, industry associations, and standardization organizations to enhance industry standards, optimize energy market mechanisms, and promote large-scale, standardized, high-quality development of the energy sector, accelerating the adoption of wind and solar energy as primary sources of energy for the future.
