Expand Participation for Sea Safety: Experience at Canoe Slalom Center

Join Us for 'Sea Safety at Canoe Slalom'

The Japanese Lifesaving Association (JLA) is excited to announce the upcoming event, 'Sea Safety at Canoe Slalom', which will be held at the Canoe Slalom Center in Edogawa, Tokyo. This event aims to provide crucial education about safety around water environments, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience in a safe setting.

Scheduled for September 4 and September 11, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, registration opens at 9:30 AM. In response to popular demand, we have expanded eligibility to welcome everyone, starting from elementary school third graders to adults. The fee for participation is a modest 1,000 yen, with an additional system usage fee of 180 yen at registration.

Recent statistics from the Japan Fund's Sea Safety Project indicate alarming numbers: 288 individuals encountered water-related accidents by August 11. Approximately 50% of drowning incidents by the ocean are due to rip currents—challenges that are often underestimated. This program aims to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle such situations.

Participation Requirements

To ensure everyone can benefit from this valuable experience:
  • - Age Limit: Open to participants aged 8 years and older (minors must be accompanied by a guardian).
  • - Guardian Requirement: Children between third grade and middle school must participate alongside a guardian. One guardian can accompany up to two children.
  • - High School Students: Participation by guardians is optional; however, a signed consent form is mandatory.
  • - Adults: Sole participation by adults is allowed. A consent form must be submitted during registration.

What to Bring

Participants should prepare with the following items:
  • - Swimwear
  • - Quick-drying T-shirt and shorts
  • - Towel
  • - Water shoes (flip-flops and loose-fitting footwear are not permitted)
  • - Sunscreen for outdoor conditions

Program Activities

1. Experience of Falling into Water: This exercise simulates real-life scenarios where unintentional falls into the water occur. Wearing life jackets, participants will have the opportunity to practice stability and calmness after falling.
2. Rip Current Simulation: Participants will learn how to counter the powerful currents safely and effectively, recognizing that swimming directly back to shore may not be feasible.
3. River Flow Experience: Understanding the dynamics of river currents, participants will learn techniques to stay safe in flowing water.

Upon completing the event, participants will receive a certificate and a clear file as a token of your achievements. A feedback survey will be required to help improve future events.

Additional Information

We prioritize safety and well-being; therefore, individuals exhibiting signs of illness or under the influence of alcohol will be prohibited from participating.
