Philocoffea and Funabashi High School Collaboration
In an exciting new venture, Philocoffea, a specialty coffee company based in Funabashi City, has joined hands with Funabashi High School to launch an innovative hands-on marketing project. This initiative aims to provide students with real-world marketing experience, culminating in the creation of a unique product named "Soul Coffee."
Background of the Partnership
Founded by Tetsu Kasuya, who is celebrated for winning the World Brewers Cup in 2016, Philocoffea strives to fill the world of coffee with happiness and inspiration. Beginning in April 2026, Philocoffea is engaging with second-year commercial students from Funabashi High School's Marketing program. This collaboration aims to not only enhance the students' marketing skills but also to create a product that exemplifies their creativity and understanding of the coffee market.
The Creation of Soul Coffee
One of the highlights of this partnership is the launch of Soul Coffee, which is set to be sold during the school's cultural festival, known as "α祭," on September 11 and 12, 2026. The students have been actively involved in developing the product's concept, packaging, and marketing strategy. A total of 1,000 limited edition packages of Soul Coffee will be available, each showcasing a unique design inspired by the school's various clubs and activities.
Using a lightly roasted coffee selected by Philocoffea, Soul Coffee aims to highlight sweetness with fruity notes, making it appealing even to those who may not typically enjoy coffee. Additionally, the product will feature original stickers designed by the students, which can be personalized with supportive messages sent via QR codes, linking the buyer directly to the students they wish to cheer on.
A Learning Experience Beyond the Classroom
On the days of the festival, the students will take on the responsibility of selling the coffee themselves, gaining hands-on experience in marketing and sales. This direct interaction with customers is invaluable, as it allows students to receive immediate feedback on their product and approach. The marketing project spans approximately 80 hours and encompasses everything from product development to promotion and actual sales execution. Tetsu Kasuya himself has played a significant role in guiding students through this process, emphasizing the importance of understanding target audiences and delivering value through their products.
Connecting Through Coffee
The packaging design for Soul Coffee reflects the passion and strength of Funabashi High School students engaged in their respective club activities. The concept, encapsulated in the slogan "A sip of Soul, imbued with School Spirit," aims to connect purchasers emotionally with the students. By offering a coffee experience that infuses a sense of local pride and motivation, the project hopes to create a coffee that serves not just as a beverage but as a symbol of encouragement for hardworking students.
Future Aspirations and Community Impact
Aside from the primary goal of product sales, the collaboration also seeks to instill a deep sense of connection between the students and their broader community, particularly alumni and local residents who have long supported the school. Students have expressed their dedication to learning about marketing while experimenting with coffee beyond traditional brewing, exploring categories such as coffee cookies and gummies.
As this project unfolds, Philocoffea's commitment to supporting local communities and fostering the next generation of innovators through practical learning experiences remains strong. This program serves as an extension of Philocoffea’s existing efforts to connect with the Funabashi area, reinforcing their mission to foster cultural and educational growth through the art and science of coffee.
In conclusion, the collaboration between Philocoffea and Funabashi High School highlights the power of experiential learning. It not only empowers students to develop tangible marketing expertise but also strengthens community ties through a shared love of coffee and education.
