Experience Solar Art by Marjan van Aubel for the First Time in Japan

Experience Solar Art by Marjan van Aubel

In an exciting cultural event, Do it Theater, based in Tokyo, is set to showcase the innovative solar art of renowned designer Marjan van Aubel for the first time in Japan. From May 25 to June 4, 2026, visitors can immerse themselves in the captivating world of solar art at a unique space called Reload located in the Shimokitazawa district. This exhibition marks a significant milestone, as it is the inaugural presentation of Marjan's works in Japan, thanks to a partnership between her and Do it Theater.

Marjan van Aubel, born in the Netherlands in 1985, is recognized for her pioneering approach that intertwines sustainability, design, and technology. Following her master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London in 2012, she exhibited her work in renowned institutions such as the V&A Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. Her works are part of permanent collections at museums like MoMA in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Furthermore, her innovative creations have gained international acclaim through media outlets and awards like WIRED and Dezeen.

Marjan's Signature Works: 'Ra' and 'Sunne'

At the exhibition, attendees will have the chance to experience Marjan's notable works, 'Ra' and 'Sunne', which transform sunlight into energy, illuminating the space as night falls. These pieces are not just artistic creations but also serve as a reflection on the cyclical nature of light—from daytime brightness to nighttime glow. This display is designed to emphasize the beautiful relationship between urban energy and aesthetic form.

Visitors are invited to witness how varying weather conditions and times of day affect the light and ambiance of the art pieces, making each visit a unique experience. The setup in Reload’s entrance hall beautifully merges the elements of light, space, and energy, providing an enchanting atmosphere for the audience.

'Solar Placemaking': A New Era in Public Spaces

This exhibition is not just a showcase but a part of Do it Theater's broader initiative called 'Solar Placemaking'. This project aims to create spaces where people can gather, experience, and connect through solar art. By leveraging renewable energy, the initiative seeks to enhance public spaces, fostering community interaction and cultural experiences.

The concept of 'Solar Placemaking' envisions a new relationship between art, culture, and local environments, culminating in enhanced values for the places we occupy. This approach is increasingly vital as society looks for sustainable ways to integrate art into everyday life.
