Rapyuta Robotics to Implement Innovative ASRS at Tehara Logistics Center
In a major development for the logistics sector, Rapyuta Robotics, based in Koto, Tokyo, has secured a contract to install a state-of-the-art automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) at the Tehara Logistics Center in Osaka City. This substantial automated warehouse, named 'Rapyuta ASRS', will encompass over 3,000 square meters—equivalent to more than 11 tennis courts. The initiative aims to optimize space utilization and enhance shipping capabilities in an era challenged by labor shortages.
Background of the Implementation
The logistics industry has been grappling with a myriad of challenges, particularly exacerbated by the anticipated driver shortages around the year 2024 and the urgent need for improved working conditions. Meanwhile, the e-commerce market continues to expand, adding layers of complexity to customer needs. In this context, Tehara Logistics has identified the need to maximize limited warehouse space while increasing productivity as essential for future business expansion.
The project will also involve a phased implementation of the 'Rapyuta ASRS' solution to facilitate automation without halting existing operations at the logistics center. Consequently, the installation is strategically divided into three distinct phases, ensuring seamless integration from initial deployment to future expansions.
Key Adoption Points
1.
Increasing Shipping Capacity without Expanding Warehouse Locations
By consolidating previously scattered inventory from both the first and second floors into the second floor, Tehara Logistics will better utilize the ground floor space for enhanced operational flexibility. This approach allows the company to prepare for future increases in volume without the need to expand facility locations.
2.
Flexible Phased Installation of Rapyuta ASRS
One of the significant advantages of the Rapyuta ASRS lies in its ability to integrate smoothly into operational environments that are already up and running. The gradual installation across three phases helps minimize disruption, allowing the center to maintain ongoing operations while scaling automation up progressively. This flexibility will support adaptations to layout changes or equipment expansions, ensuring that operational burdens are kept to a minimum while improving the automation base.
3.
Centralized Management for Multiple Suppliers
By consolidating products that were previously managed separately by different suppliers, the warehouse's inventory management and shipping operations can be streamlined, enhancing overall efficiency for the logistics center.

Statement from Tehara Logistics' CEO, Akari Imai
In her remarks, Imai expressed the longstanding challenge faced by her company. "For two to three decades, our large material handling equipment has been deeply integrated into our on-site operations, often leading to a dilemma where we couldn't afford to halt shipping in order to update equipment. Many logistics providers likely share similar concerns."
She highlighted the pivotal role of Rapyuta ASRS in solving this dilemma. "What I appreciate the most is the ability to install and expand the system incrementally without disrupting our current operations. The block structure eliminates the need for anchor work, allowing for gradual installation tailored to the layout of our facility. This means we can advance the automation process without impacting daily shipping activities."
Furthermore, the ability to increase storage efficiency by up to 2.5 times was underscored as a crucial advantage. Effective use of vertical space within the limited floor area will significantly contribute to reducing logistics costs. "Having the option to proceed gradually while we maintain operations carries substantial importance," Imai added.
