Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennial Kicks Off Exciting Second Phase with New Installations and Artist Engagement

Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennial Launches Phase Two

The inaugural Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennial, a grand celebration of culture and creativity, has taken a significant leap forward as it enters its much-anticipated second phase. This new phase showcases nine innovative installations across the emirate, transforming public spaces into vibrant canvases for artistic expression.

Running until April 30, 2025, the biennial features works from both local and international artists, including the likes of Tarik Kiswanson, Ayesha Hadhir, and Rand Abdul Jabbar. With over 70 artists contributing to the exhibit, this extraordinary initiative has successfully curated a collection of 40 brand new artworks prominently displayed throughout key locations in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

Following a successful launch in November, the new installations by various artists were unveiled recently, including contributions from Anga Art Collective and Lúcia Koch. Notably, Atelier Aziz Al Qatami will continue to evolve a specific piece at the Abu Dhabi Bus Terminal, inviting active participation from the public to engage with art in real-time.

The biennial encompasses eight distinct routes that facilitate exploration of these installations, making it accessible for visitors wanting to experience the creativity flowing through Abu Dhabi's streets. These routes include key areas such as the Corniche, public parks, and historical sites, thereby ensuring that the art integrates seamlessly into the everyday urban experience.

In addition to the installations, the public program features a variety of activities designed to engage visitors and stimulate dialogue. Events include curated guided tours, discussions led by artists and commissioners, and collaborative performances, highlighting the inclusive spirit of the biennial. A standout event to look forward to is the projection of Wael Shawky's Drama 1882 (2024) at the Cultural Foundation, a significant work that debuted at the Venice Biennale.

Reem Fadda, the Cultural Programming Director at DCT Abu Dhabi, underscored the significance of this biennial in redefining Abu Dhabi’s artistic landscape. “The works showcased in this second phase reflect a wide array of perspectives on what ‘public’ means within our unique cultural context. Through these installations, we delve into intricate connections between community, the environment, urban life, and local identity, all of which shape public spaces here in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.”

Clémence Bergal, Director of Public Art Abu Dhabi, also expressed her enthusiasm for the project. “The Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennial represents a crucial component of our broader commitment to nurturing and incorporating art into the societal fabric of our emirate. Each art piece serves as a means to enhance community engagement and explorations of public spaces. We're dedicated to improving the quality of life in Abu Dhabi through artistic endeavors and infrastructural development.”
