Core Selected for JAXA's Space Technology Demonstration Acceleration Program (JAXA-STEPS)
Core Co., Ltd., headquartered in Setagaya, Tokyo, is proud to announce its selection for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)'s Space Technology Demonstration Acceleration Program (JAXA-STEPS). This selection enables Core to focus on the development of an "Onboard PPP Receiver for Small Satellites," utilizing the achievements from JAXA's Satellite Positioning System Technology Unit.
Background and Purpose of the Project
In recent years, earth observation satellites have increasingly become vital for addressing societal challenges through applications such as disaster assessment, infrastructure monitoring, and resource management in marine, forestry, and agricultural sectors. To efficiently utilize satellite data for swift disaster response and infrastructure oversight, precise satellite positioning is crucial.
Traditionally, high-precision satellite positioning was determined via post-processing on the ground. However, with the Onboard PPP (Precise Point Positioning) technology, signals broadcast from the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System "MICHIBIKI" (L6E signal, MADOCA-PPP) and multi-frequency distance measurement signals from GNSS will be received and processed on the satellite itself. This allows for real-time, centimeter-level single-point positioning in orbit, reducing dependence on ground post-processing and shortening the time required for data provision. It also aims to enhance the positioning accuracy of satellite images and improve the usability of observation data.
From August 2023 to December 2024, JAXA's Satellite Positioning System Technology Unit plans to develop an Onboard PPP Demonstration System based on the Stardust Program, with plans for in-orbit verification using the QPS-SAR10 in FY2025 under JAXA-STEPS. The project aims to contribute to rapid and precise disaster response and infrastructure monitoring by developing an Onboard PPP receiver designed for small satellites, leveraging advancements in satellite data utilization.
Contributions and Expectations from Core
Core has previously developed GNSS receivers compatible with MADOCA-PPP for land applications, focusing on miniaturization and cost reduction through the use of commercial components. In this project, leveraging this expertise, Core aims to develop an Onboard PPP receiver compatible with MADOCA-PPP for small satellites with support from JAXA. The objective is to achieve a receiver that is suitable for onboard use on small satellites by focusing on cost, size, weight, and power consumption reductions, while utilizing the knowledge accrued during the receiver development process.
Expected Benefits from the Initiative
Through this initiative, Core aspires to foster the societal implementation of Onboard PPP technology with JAXA's support, contributing to the development of domestic industrial talent in GNSS technology. The project aims to expand within the space business sector by applying the skills developed in GNSS receiver innovation on the ground to satellite applications, thereby enhancing Japan's competitive edge in the space industry.
What is JAXA-STEPS?
JAXA-STEPS, or the JAXA Space Technologies rapid Evaluation Program on Small satellite, aims to provide opportunities for concept verification and demonstration of innovative and foundational missions and key technologies that can be utilized by both public and private sectors. The program seeks to accelerate research and development, expand opportunities for space demonstration, and facilitate the social implementation of research and development outcomes.
