Jonathan Hoffman Confirmed as Permanent CEO of Globeleq, Leading Energy Transition

Jonathan Hoffman Confirmed as CEO of Globeleq

On March 31, 2025, the board of directors at Globeleq, the leading independent power producer in Africa, revealed that Jonathan Hoffman has been officially appointed as the permanent CEO. Having previously served as the interim CEO since July 2024, Hoffman’s confirmation follows an extensive search process that considered both internal and external candidates.

Hoffman joined Globeleq in 2010 and rose through the ranks, becoming the Development Director in 2020. His leadership in securing new investments and agreements across the African continent has been commendable, particularly with recent achievements such as the awarding of the Red Sands project, which stands as Africa's largest standalone battery storage initiative. With over two decades of experience in the energy sector, Hoffman's previous roles include positions at ABB Energy Ventures and co-founding InfraCo.

Under Hoffman's leadership, Globeleq has nearly doubled its operational and construction capacity since 2015. The company has been pivotal, accounting for 43% of the utility-scale renewable and gas-fired power projects that reached financial closure in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) during the 2020s.

Now, as the new permanent CEO, Hoffman is set to guide Globeleq through its next phase of growth, with a keen focus on the energy transition in Southern Africa and Kenya. Globeleq is currently operating 12 renewable energy power plants in South Africa, Mozambique, and Kenya, with an additional 485 MW under construction and several significant projects on the development horizon.

The company aims to bolster its existing power plants outside South Africa that deliver essential energy to local communities and industries, simultaneously generating returns for its shareholders.

Laurence Mulliez, Chairperson of Globeleq, commented on Hoffman’s appointment, stating, "I am very pleased to confirm that Jonathan Hoffman is now the permanent CEO of Globeleq. His deep understanding of our staff and portfolio uniquely positions him to lead the company during this growth period. Since becoming interim CEO, Jonathan has impressed the board with his dedication to the company and incisive knowledge of our sector and partners."

Hoffman himself expressed excitement about his role, stating, "I am thrilled to lead the talented team at Globeleq to fulfill our mission and drive energy transition in Southern Africa. My absolute commitment is to address our customers' challenges and add value to our shareholders."

Globeleq, which is 70% owned by British International Investment and 30% by Norfund, has emerged as the principal developer, owner, and operator of electricity generation in Africa. Since its inception in 2002, the company has built a diversified portfolio of independent power plants, generating 1,794 MW across 17 sites in seven countries, with an additional 485 MW currently under construction and over 2,000 MW of energy projects in development.
