Bi-Rite Creamery Marks Two Decades of Community and Delicious Ice Cream Innovation

Bi-Rite Creamery Celebrates 20 Years of Community

This August, Bi-Rite Creamery proudly marks its two-decade journey of delighting San Francisco locals with handcrafted ice cream. What began in a quaint 700-square-foot space on 18th Street has blossomed into a beloved institution. Founded by Kris Hoogerhyde and Anne Walker, their aim was simple yet profound: to create outstanding ice cream from the finest ingredients while fostering a space for community gatherings.

A Dream Turned Reality

When Bi-Rite Creamery opened its doors, Kris and Anne hoped for a modest turnout of around 100 visitors on a busy Saturday. However, the community response was overwhelming from day one, with lines that never seemed to fade. This outpouring of love from the community has only spurred the founders to innovate and expand their offerings over the years.

To commemorate this milestone, Bi-Rite is planning a series of events over the next three months, featuring a mix of special flavors, exciting giveaways, and community-centric experiences. The celebration isn't just about ice cream; it's a heartfelt acknowledgment of all who have supported Bi-Rite's journey – from loyal customers to local farmers.

Culinary Innovation Meets Community Tradition

Initially, the founders intended to launch a bakery inspired by their shared experience at San Francisco’s esteemed restaurant, 42 Degrees. However, upon discovering a storefront near Dolores Park, they realized the neighborhood was craving high-quality ice cream just as much as it desired freshly baked goods. This pivot proved transformative, as they started to craft ice cream that combines nostalgia with inventive flavors, all made from scratch with careful attention to sourcing only the best seasonal ingredients from local farmers.

In fact, they were pioneers in the San Francisco ice cream scene, becoming the first to partner with the Straus Family Creamery to create an organic dairy base. This commitment to quality not only sets Bi-Rite apart but also reflects their deep-rooted philosophy of supporting the local economy.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Reflecting on their journey, Kris Hoogerhyde stated, "Twenty years later, we're still doing what we set out to do. Making everything from scratch, celebrating incredible California ingredients, and creating a place where people come together. It goes beyond just selling ice cream; it's about creating memories and experiences that matter."

For the anniversary events, attendees can look forward to:
  • - A special anniversary flavor: Pistachio Raspberry Celebration with Pistachio Shortbread, crafted by Kris and Anne based on community input.
  • - Nostalgic flavors return from the Creamery's archives, celebrating the rich history of their menus.
  • - A limited-edition anniversary pint collection that showcases the original flavors integral to their brand's identity.
  • - Ice cream-making classes with the founders themselves at the nonprofit cooking school 18 Reasons.
  • - A guest sundae contest, allowing fans to contribute their creative ideas for a potential new menu item.
  • - Special anniversary merchandise available for purchase, along with various giveaways and promotions throughout the summer.
  • - A jubilant birthday celebration scheduled for late August.

Honoring Community Memories

As part of the festivities, guests are encouraged to reminisce and share their fondest memories tied to Bi-Rite Creamery. From pivotal life events to everyday delights, the stories encapsulate how integral the Creamery has become in San Francisco’s social fabric over the years.

As Bi-Rite Creamery looks towards the future, their guiding principle remains steadfast: to create exceptional ice cream from scratch, support local producers, and contribute positively to the community through their ethos, Creating Community Through Food™.
