Mitigation Resources of North America® Earns Prestigious Reclamation Award

Mitigation Resources of North America, a subsidiary of NACCO Industries, proudly announced on October 8, 2025, that it has been awarded the Exceptional Reclamation Award by the Alabama Mining Association. This accolade recognizes the company's outstanding reclamation efforts at the Burton Bend site, located in Walker County, Alabama.

The purpose of the Exceptional Reclamation Award is to highlight reclamation projects that demonstrate significant benefits following mining activities. This recognition emphasizes the effective measures taken to prevent erosion and environmental damage, as well as the innovative techniques utilized during the reclamation process. Drew Haley, Vice President of Operations for Mitigation Resources, expressed appreciation for the recognition, stating, "We are honored that the association chose to recognize the stellar work done by Mitigation Resources at this reclaimed mine site. This project is a great example of how transformative reclamation can be."

The reclamation project at the Burton Bend site focused on restoring the land to a condition that is safe, stable, and environmentally sound. This involved processes such as the elimination of highwalls, soil replacement, remediation of coal yard areas, and revegetation efforts. Following a strategic approach, the crew replaced topsoil at a minimum depth of six inches to ensure the long-term stability and growth of vegetation.

To further manage water flow and prevent erosion, the teams established diversion terrace bench ditches and constructed riprap down drains. Once the land was prepared, the reclaimed areas underwent seeding, fertilization, and mulching, using celebratory seasonal seed mixes to promote a healthy ecosystem.

Following the seeding, Mitigation Resources implemented a six-month erosion control period. During this time, the crews worked diligently to repair any diversions, rills, or gullies that developed and reseeded areas where necessary. Corey Weathy, the Construction Supervisor for the project, underscored the project's significance, stating, "This work successfully set the foundation for a sustainable, fully reclaimed landscape that supports both environmental health and long-term site stability. This project is a testament to the incredible power of reclamation and our ongoing commitment to restore responsibly."
