The highly anticipated exhibition, "Kogei meets...出会いから生まれるかたち", is set to launch on January 10, 2026 at the Spiral Garden located in the heart of Omotesando, Tokyo. Organized by the esteemed Yomiuri Shimbun, this event promises an immersive experience into the world of traditional Japanese crafts, showcasing the intricate artistry that has been refined over generations.

The Essence of Kogei

Kogei, or traditional crafts, encompasses intangible techniques developed over long periods, emphasizing both skill and an understanding of materials. Every piece exhibits a deep appreciation for the material properties and a mastery of technique, resulting in a diversity of creations from functional beauty to pieces meant solely for appreciation.

The "Kogei meets..." exhibition will present works by six skilled artisans from various fields:
  • - Yoshirō Kimura – Ceramics
  • - Kunihiko Moriguchi – Dyeing and Weaving (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property, “Yūzen”)
  • - Kazumi Murose – Lacquer Art (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property, “Maki-e”)
  • - Satoshi Hara – Metalwork
  • - Takeunsai Tanabe IV – Bamboo Craft
  • - Hirotake Nakamura – Dolls

This exhibition seeks to broaden the viewer's understanding by showcasing both iconic works and innovative pieces by the same artisans, highlighting the evolution of their creativity and skill throughout their careers. This dual presentation aims to emphasize the unifying themes of mastery and inspiration found within each artist's journey.
