In a pivotal update, the Consorzio Alto Adige Wines has shared the latest developments regarding their Unità Geografiche Aggiuntive (UGA) classification, aimed at refining the recognition of geographical areas within the Alto Adige wine region. What is the UGA Classification?


The UGA classification divides the Alto Adige DOC into 86 officially recognized subzones. Each UGA is grounded on stringent criteria that consider vital elements such as soil types, microclimates, altitudes, slope inclinations, sun exposure, and rainfall, among others. This structured approach is designed to enhance the authenticity of wines produced in these unique environments.

Just a year later, in 2025, this number surged to 60 producers, expanding to 52 UGAs over 403 hectares, now accounting for 6.7% of the overall production. This significant rise reflects a growing acknowledgment of the UGA system, even amidst the natural variability of the vintages, with a notably smaller harvest observed in 2024 compared to 2025.
