DEWALT Introduces World's First Fleet-Capable Drilling Robot for Data Centers
In a groundbreaking development for the construction industry, DEWALT, in partnership with August Robotics, has unveiled the world's first fleet-capable downward drilling robot. This innovative technology aims to revolutionize data center construction, a sector currently experiencing unprecedented growth with over 400 data centers in development worldwide. This cutting-edge robotic solution addresses the increasing demand for artificial intelligence computing infrastructure, offering significant improvements in speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
The new robotic drilling system boasts the ability to drill at speeds up to 10 times faster than traditional construction methods. Throughout its pilot program with one of the leading tech companies, it has shown remarkable results—reducing construction timelines by an impressive 80 weeks across 10 data center projects. This breakthrough is particularly crucial as hyperscalers, which make up nearly 80% of the global data center demand, invest heavily in infrastructure to support burgeoning AI technologies.
Bill Beck, President of Tools & Outdoor at Stanley Black & Decker, emphasized the urgent need for efficient construction solutions, stating that the industry is projected to invest approximately $7 trillion in data centers by 2030. "Our customers have voiced the importance of construction speed. This robot enables rapid drilling operations that save time and reduce costs while providing almost flawless accuracy and enhanced jobsite safety. DEWALT's commitment to innovation is transforming the future of construction," he said.
The robotic solution’s ability to autonomously execute the critical task of drilling thousands of holes marks a pivotal advancement in the construction workflow. These holes are essential for the installation of server rack stops and structural legs necessary for overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. With the robot's implementation, DEWALT has seen remarkable cost-efficiency in the construction process, evidenced by a significant decrease in cost per hole and a stunning 99.97% accuracy rate across over 90,000 drilled locations.
Further solidifying its role in the market, DEWALT's robotic drilling technology is part of a larger ecosystem aimed at enhancing user experience and safety on job sites. This ecosystem incorporates DEWALT's PERFORM AND PROTECT™ tools, designed to reduce vibration and dust while improving user control. Moreover, it pairs with industry-leading Integrated Command and Control (ICC) anchoring solutions, further aligning with DEWALT's commitment to providing superior construction tools.
Set to be commercially available in mid-2026, the robotic drilling solution will be demonstrated at the World of Concrete® Trade Show in Las Vegas from January 20-22, allowing industry professionals to witness its capabilities firsthand. DEWALT continues to pave the way for future innovations in construction technology, catering to the evolving needs of a rapidly changing industry.
