Minesto's Initiative in Taiwan: Accelerating Ocean Energy Development Through Global Innovation

Minesto's Strategic Move in Taiwan

Minesto, renowned as a leading developer in ocean energy, is taking significant steps towards expanding its market presence in Taiwan. Recently, the company secured a grant of €24,000 from the Swedish Energy Agency (SEA) via the Global Innovation Accelerator (GIA) programme, aimed at promoting innovative energy solutions. This funding is crucial for accelerating the establishment of tidal energy power plants, particularly in promising sites identified near Keelung and Green Island.

In December 2025, Minesto showcased its advancements at the Nordic-Taiwan Sustainable Energy Forum held in Taipei. This forum, a collaboration between Business Sweden Taiwan and Taiwan's Energy Administration, gathered key figures from various sectors, including policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders. Discussions centered around energy resilience and the importance of international collaboration and innovation in fostering sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. YungLung Chen, Project Developer at Minesto Taiwan Ltd, highlighted the importance of this event. He stated, "Participating in the Nordic-Taiwan Sustainable Energy Forum and advancing our work under the Global Innovation Accelerator programme builds momentum for Minesto in Taiwan." This initiative will enable the company not only to broaden its partner base but also to secure necessary project financing for establishing its first Dragon Farms in Taiwanese waters.

Taiwan presents a compelling market for Minesto, strengthened by its collaborations with institutions such as the National Taiwan Ocean University and a partnership with Taiwan Cement Green Energy. These efforts are crucial in advancing the commercialization of ocean energy solutions that meet Taiwan's future renewable energy demands. National assessments underscore Taiwan's potential to generate sustainable energy, thanks to its strong tidal currents and robust ocean flows, which align well with Minesto's tidal technology.

The Dragon Farms initiative holds promise for addressing Taiwan's pressing energy needs, as the country aims to bolster its energy resilience and transition towards a low-carbon energy system. The predictable nature of tidal energy generation, coupled with Taiwan's commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio, positions Minesto strategically to make a significant impact in this sector.

In summary, Minesto's initiatives in Taiwan are a pivotal step towards realizing the potential of ocean energy in meeting regional energy demands. The GIA programme funding and strategic partnerships established during the Nordic-Taiwan Sustainable Energy Forum are set to play vital roles in shaping the future of renewable energy in Taiwan. Through these collaborative efforts, Minesto not only reinforces its commitment to sustainable energy solutions but also establishes itself as a key player in the global push for innovative, eco-friendly energy systems.
