Revitalizing Minamisanriku: The Wakamatsu Sheep Project's Second Phase

In the wake of the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Minamisanriku Town in Miyagi Prefecture has been on a remarkable journey of recovery and growth. Central to this endeavor is the Wakamatsu Sheep Project, an initiative championed by Samantha Thavasa Japan Limited under the leadership of President Koji Furuya. This project not only aims to revive local industries but also to promote sustainable practices by utilizing materials that would otherwise be discarded.

What is the Wakamatsu Sheep Project?

Minamisanriku, located on the southern part of the Sanriku coastline, suffered significant losses during the earthquake. As the town began its rebuilding process, Sato Umi Farm emerged as a beacon of hope, utilizing the region's mineral-rich seaweed to raise the Wakamatsu Sheep with care and love. These sheep, raised under optimal conditions, yield exquisite meat and are highly sought after by high-end restaurants and ryotei in the Ginza area. However, a substantial challenge persists: the skin of these sheep, which often ends up being wasted due to a lack of proper uses.

To address this waste, Samantha Thavasa has launched a new phase in the Wakamatsu Sheep Project, transforming the discarded sheep leather into fashionable products that align with their brand ethos of innovation and sustainability. The latest offering, a stylish keyring that doubles as a bag charm, showcases not only the soft texture unique to Wakamatsu Sheep but also the vibrant color varieties that Samantha Thavasa is renowned for. Each keyring is elegantly marked with the project logo on its reverse side, underscoring the commitment to both craftsmanship and local heritage.

The Road Ahead

As part of the continued efforts for revitalization, Samantha Thavasa aims to explore further product development using Wakamatsu Sheep leather. By creating new market opportunities, the project aspires to support local industry development and minimize waste in a region deeply affected by environmental and economic challenges.

The collaboration between Minamisanriku Town, Sato Umi Farm, and Samantha Thavasa symbolizes a significant leap towards sustainability and community rejuvenation. With planning initiated in Autumn 2023, this partnership marks an essential step forward in combining fashion with purpose.
