Empowering Veterans Through Skilled Trades

In a notable move to support military service members and veterans, the Home Builders Institute (HBI) has proudly announced its receipt of a grant from Google.org. This funding aims to expand skilled trades training initiatives that will benefit transitioning military personnel, veterans, as well as military spouses and family members. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to assist 25,000 veterans and their families to build sustainable careers in skilled trades.

HBI, a national nonprofit dedicated to training, certifying, and placing students in skilled trade careers, is one of three organizations selected for this grant, which was also awarded to Hiring Our Heroes and Student Veterans of America (SVA). By focusing on the importance of providing a second career for veterans, HBI emphasizes the value these individuals bring to the workforce through their discipline, leadership, and ability to achieve difficult tasks—qualities honed through years of military service.

Ed Brady, President and CEO of HBI, stated, "Google.org's investment will change the lives of more transitioning military, military spouses, veterans, and their family members because the people who served this country deserve a second career as strong as their first." Training Programs Offered by HBI

HBI's Military Services program provides tuition-free, 12-week training in skilled trades through the Department of Defense SkillBridge program at ten locations situated on or near military installations—such as Camp Pendleton, Fort Bragg, and Fort Hood. The program teaches essential skills such as carpentry and electrical work, while also assisting participants in obtaining industry-recognized certifications and job placement support.

With the grant from Google.org, HBI will be able to add more training cohorts at existing SkillBridge sites, ultimately strengthening job placement support and expanding available training programs. This support comes at a critical time, as research conducted by HBI reveals a significant shortage of skilled labor that poses an economic burden estimated at around $10.8 billion annually. In fact, the construction industry needs more than 700,000 additional skilled workers yearly to meet the increasing demand.

Benefits and Outcomes

Military service members who complete HBI's Military Services training find themselves entering the job market with an average starting wage of over $23 per hour, highlighting the lucrative opportunities available in the trades. Furthermore, HBI's Military Services program boasts an impressive job-placement rate of 87%, demonstrating the efficacy of the training provided.
