Roche Diagnostics Strengthens Ebola Testing in the DRC
Overview
As the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to face the severe challenges posed by the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus, Roche Diagnostics has taken significant steps to bolster local testing capabilities. With reports of over 8,000 confirmed cases and a high fatality rate, timely and accurate testing is critical. In response, Roche has provided the Institut National de Santé Publique (INSP) with two advanced molecular testing instruments, aiming to enhance the country’s capacity to test for this deadly virus.
Partnership for Improvement
The partnership between Roche Diagnostics and INSP is pivotal in the ongoing efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak. Roche is not only supplying the innovative Light Cycler and Magna Pure instruments but also committing to train local laboratory technicians, ensuring that they are well-equipped to manage the testing processes. The instruments will be preconfigured by Roche and deployed to Bunia, where local validation of the tests will commence.
"Outbreak response depends on having the right testing capability available where it is needed," stated Johan Descombes, General Manager for Francophone West Africa. He emphasized the importance of local expertise in effectively addressing the outbreak and expressed commitment to supporting local responders with essential tools and training.
Local Validation and Future Plans
Once delivered, the INSP will validate the equipment and the tests, which have been developed specifically for the Bundibugyo virus. This validation process is crucial as it sets the stage for shipping additional tests and deploying more instruments to further enhance testing capabilities across multiple health zones affected by Ebola.
As of September 28, 2026, the UN Health Authority reported alarming statistics: 8,067 confirmed cases and 3,901 deaths, highlighting the urgent need for effective testing and public health measures. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the risk in the DRC as very high, underscoring the need for robust and reliable testing methods to support response efforts.
The Importance of Reliable Testing
With the WHO emphasizing the necessity of strengthened surveillance, case detection, and investigation, Roche's timely delivery of these instruments is a significant step forward. Rapid and reliable laboratory testing is essential for detecting cases, monitoring the outbreak's spread, and implementing effective public health interventions.
The WHO’s temporary recommendations for the DRC also include enhancing local validation processes, which Roche is supporting through its partnership with INSP. These recommendations aim to curb the current outbreak while preparing for potential future health emergencies.
Commitment to Ongoing Support
Descombes concluded with a statement on Roche's dedication to ongoing collaboration with local laboratory teams, emphasizing the goal of understanding where further support is most needed. Roche's focus is not just on the present outbreak but also on strengthening preparedness for future outbreaks and pandemics.
As the validation of the tests progresses, Roche anticipates deploying additional instruments and expediting the delivery of more tests, aiming to maximize their impact on public health in the region.
