Launch of the GOHAN Project Aims to Expand Japan's Rice and Rice Products Exports

GOHAN Project: Expanding Japan's Rice Export Opportunities

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is set to launch the GOHAN Project, aimed at enhancing the export of Japanese rice and its by-products. This initiative will serve as a platform for industry stakeholders to engage in discussions regarding export strategies and formulate specific actions to boost the market.

Overview of the GOHAN Project

The project addresses the necessity of increasing rice demand through the promotion of production, thereby securing Japan’s food security. Notably, expanding exports and exploring new demands such as rice flour are vital for market growth. To successfully broaden Japan's rice market, collaboration among all stakeholders, from producers to exporters and consumers overseas, is essential.

With this in mind, the GOHAN Project aims to bring together innovative businesses and experts willing to engage in advanced collaborative efforts. The initiative seeks to surpass traditional frameworks and develop practical solutions for enhancing Japan’s rice exports.

At the first meeting, scheduled for December 23, 2025, the discussion will focus on various content categories, including rice balls (onigiri), dining out (gaishoku), ready-to-eat meals (chuushoku), and packed rice (pakku gohan). Stakeholders will deliberate on strategic directions for expanding market opportunities.
