AI Confidence Grows in Telecom And Media Sectors Despite Limited Impact

The Increasing Confidence in AI Among TMT Leaders

In the rapidly evolving landscapes of telecommunications, media, and technology, confidence in artificial intelligence (AI) is soaring, as highlighted by the latest research from Economist Enterprise, supported by HCLTech. Released on July 27, 2026, the report sheds light on the escalating optimism surrounding AI, yet intriguingly notes that measurable impacts on business outcomes continue to lag behind expectations.

The study involved insights from over 200 C-suite executives operating within the TMT sector across the United States and Europe. The majority of respondents indicated a firm belief that their investments in AI are yielding positive results. However, starkly, only one-third reported being able to quantify the business value generated from these investments. This discrepancy raises important questions about the ability of firms to unlock the full potential of AI when they struggle to demonstrate its measurable benefits.

Charlotte Bullard Davies, Principal of Research Methods & Innovation at Economist Enterprise, pointed out that the findings reflect a significant AI value paradox. As more organizations penetrate deeper into AI applications, the gap between initial optimism and quantifiable results appears to widen. This paradox poses challenges particularly for executive leaders striving to persuade stakeholders of the value AI can bring to their companies.

The Convergence of Industries

Furthermore, the research emphasizes how AI is driving convergence within the TMT ecosystem. As companies increasingly question traditional industry boundaries, they discover opportunities to partner with, compete against, or merge with adjacent verticals. This evolving approach paves the way for new growth avenues and value creation for businesses in the sector.

Despite the promise shown by AI, challenges remain as companies shift from mere experimentation to broader adoption of AI technologies. The report notes a troubling discrepancy in resources devoted to upskilling talent: though upskilling is recognized as a top priority for future AI investment, only 20% of organizations have a formal strategy for it. It highlights that while rapid AI deployment is evident, just 17% have governance frameworks that shape operational aspects of their AI systems.

Strategic Focus and Ecosystem Collaboration

Anil Ganjoo, HCLTech's Chief Growth Officer, indicated that the boundaries separating TMT industries are quickly fading as AI becomes ingrained within every layer of their value chains.
